Goodbyes by Vanessa St. Denis [PG]
Fandom: FOREVER KNIGHT
Pairing: Nick/Natalie
Length: 10,380 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: archived here and here
Why this must be read: This is another post finale story, only this one looks at the lives of the characters after the passage of a substantial amount of time. Fifteen years to be exact. In the eyes of the world Natalie has moved on--to a different continent, to a new life, to a new man--or has she? An invitation to Jenny Schanke's baby shower brings her back to Toronto and its ghosts for one last time. This story does a lovely job of etching the curiousity that surrounds Natalie and in creating a wonderful presence in Myra Schanke.
Before Myra could comment, the Rolls came stealing out of the night as sleek and silent as a cat and crouched purring at the curb in front of the house. Natalie rose smoothly to her feet and turned smiling sadly, holding out her hand to assist Myra. Accepting her friend's hand, Myra stiffly got to her feet and followed Natalie out to the street. The driver, Thomas, was already out of the car and was holding the door open expectantly. It was uncannily like a ghost story Myra remembered from her childhood about a phantom coach that came to take the dead away. Only this time it wasn't a decrepit carriage pulled by skeletal, hollow-eyed horses but a shiny vintage automobile and the spectral coachman was a comely young man with rosy not withered cheeks. Even so, Myra was seized by the sudden certainty that once Natalie got into that car and drove away that she'd never see her again.
