Why this must be read: Gene's mysterious missus, who in canon is mentioned rarely and never seen, tends to be written out in fic. This turns her into a real character, and exactly the sort of woman that I can see Gene being married to. It's short, but packs in a lot of lovely little details about their relationship and Gene's past. It's sweet without being cloying, and there's a nice edge of snarkiness between them. By the end I kind of want to adopt George into my personal canon.
The girl - George - raises an eyebrow. "How old are you? Seven? Nine at a stretch?"
"Eleven, thanks, you mouthy so-and-so."
"I turn twelve in September."
"Well good for you. I'll bake you a cake."
"Asking fifteen year old girls to dance, baking cakes; something tells me you live a strange and interesting life."
"I'll tell you all about it some time."
"Really?"
"No."
