City Without... by Roseveare [PG13]
Genre: ANGEL
Pairing: Doyle/Cordelia friendship
Author's LJ:
roseveare
Author's Website: http://www.geocities.com/roseveare/
Why this MUST be read:
What if Doyle hadn't been able to convince Angel to take on a partner in his fight against the forces of darkness? What if Angel had just said no?
This AU retelling of the pilot episode remains one of my favorite Doyle fics of all time. Doyle and Cordelia are written perfectly in character and while Doyle is the hero of the piece, it never takes things to unbelievable levels. He doesn't single handedly fight off a pack of goons with flashy kung-fu moves and fancy toys. When Doyle saves somebody, it's usually a little messy and a little crazy and a lot more about luck than it is about skill, but that's okay. Because it's his heart that makes him a hero. Because he's a guy who would be just about the last choice for somebody's savior, and he knows it, but he's still there fighting the good fight. He might not be entirely sober when he saves the damnsel in distress, but he'll damn well be there giving it his all to make sure she's okay. And Roseveare captures that aspect of him perfectly here.
