Why this must be read: This is a slow, sweet story about Dan and Duck after the movie, and about how Dan learns to live again. It pushes one of my buttons, namely the connection between people and the landscape and nature that surrounds them. Let me just quote one of my favorite bits:

Through the winter Dan is quiet. Some part of him is – not hibernating, exactly, but it's like the trees in Duck's back yard: dormant above ground but alive down deep, still growing. Putting down roots.

Then, when spring comes, Dan wakes up with the land, and he and Duck make maple syrup in Duck's back yard.
