Why this must be read: Though season five contains some of the grimmest of the continuing story arcs, of which Christmas Carol/Emily is certainly the saddest, some of the best fanfiction the fandom ever produced was inspired by them. "The Mill" is a very dark take on the possible consequences of the events of those episodes. Cofax's writing is both technically brilliant and emotionally devastating.

This is such an excellent fic. It's incredibly hard to read, but in the best way possible. I'm also very fond of the author's commentary on it.
