The Guardian and the Sage by BetaReject (PG)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen/family: Padmé Amidala and Sola Naberrie. Mention of Anakin/Padmé romance.
Length: 2,535 words
Author on LJ:

Author Website: her ff.net profile; website
Why this must be read:
This story is made of four beautifully crafted snapshots of the bond between sisters. It's full of subtle interaction in which glances say as much as (if not more than) words. It paints a sad picture of a family torn apart by politics and dangerous secrets, and the frayed bond that survives between Padmé and Sola. This is a solemn and haunting story, but the idiosyncrasy of BetaReject's fics is that the despair is never complete. There is always a hint of hope, a promise of someday.

"You are exactly what our people need, Padmé."
"You say that because I am your sister."
It was the first time in far too long that Sola had seen Padmé smile. In that instant, she wondered if it would be the last. At twelve years old, Padmé had already sacrificed the freedoms every child deserved. Her life belonged to the Naboo now as did her loyalties.
Her sister was an unwitting victim of tradition and politics, a prodigy whose gifts came at a high price. Sola wondered if Padmé truly understood the path she chose to follow. The innocence of her smile said no, the weight of her dark eyes said something else entirely.
