Why this must be read:
Yes, it's Obidala, and it's good enough to get a rec from a non-shipper. This story has one of the best characterizations of Padmé I have ever seen. The author does a great job at capturing the dichotomy of Padmé's character – the constant conflict between her head and her heart, between stubbornness and compassion. Obi-Wan, too, is in character, and there is an almost Han/Leia-esque chemistry between them. Wow, I say.

His eyes are drawn to Luke as he contemplates what he ought to say. He doesn’t really have any specific plan in mind for how to draw her back, and part of him wonders what in the galaxy he’s doing here in the first place. But he knows he has to try.

The child’s blue eyes find his. So like Anakin’s. His father’s.

“Padmé–” Obi-Wan begins.

“Don’t.” Her voice is the same, cold enough to freeze the air around her. “I have no idea why you came here, Master Kenobi, but I have already informed you that I will not be returning to live in the Jundland Wastes, regardless of security concerns. Luke and his sister survived nine months while I was pregnant with them, so surely my son can survive my presence in his life. I will not go into Anchorhead or Mos Eisley, and I will conceal myself should anyone come to call at the farm. I have made my decision, and you will not change it.”

He sighs, and understands why so many feared debating politics with her. She wears her Senator Amidala mask even now, and does not show even a flicker of regret or doubt. A last, desperate plan occurs to him–

“Also, I assume that you will not stoop so low as to attempt a Jedi Mind Trick on me,” Padmé says, her voice even frostier. “If, however, you take leave of your senses and choose to do so, I daresay you shall find that I am not so easily influenced as some.”

“Right,” is all Obi-Wan can say, his final plan having been shot down in flames. “Well. I’ll not trouble you further, Senator Amidala. I bid you a good afternoon.”
