Why this must be read: This is the end of the world with some realism. It's stunningly written - poetic really - but with a sobering tone and a style that feels appropriately gaunt. The writing is unflinching, but not without significant delicacy in its own stark way. This fic is all about fighting, and losing, and death, and dispair, and I love it for painting Mulder and Scully as people who hang onto their humanity as best they can, even when their best isn't enough. It's the only apocafic I've read in this fandom that has been able to descend this far into the darkness without falling into noir and losing some of its realism.
