Why this must be read: Most Cap/Bucky fic assumes Bucky and Steve are comfortable and secure in their sexualities, even going back to World War II. While I think that's a pretty awesome indication of how fandom views the men, I like this fic because it provides a realistic alternate interpretation. Bucky comes across as a very realistic teen/early20-year-old in love with his best friend in the middle of a war in this fic. The war is first and foremost in his thoughts, and everything in the story is judged by how it will affect the war. But underneath that, there's a growing realization that he's not 100% comfortable with.
Snippet:
He's Steve's friend. Steve's only friend in a sea of acquaintances, admiring troops, and very grateful French.
Only, lately, he's not just Steve's friend. He wants something more. But he's not quite sure what it is.
But it's there.
An itch that won't quit.
