Why this must be read: There is such a shortage of backstory fic in this fandom, which is odd because the backstory is so important to the central plot. In eleven short K, cofax does an exceptional job of filling in a little bit of backstory for both Mulder and Samantha - almost juxtaposing the two siblings in a way that's unexpected and intriguing. The somewhat fragmentary nature of the narrative as it builds, and the unassuming tone of the writing is immensely clever. It seems like such a low key fic, and yet we all know how this story goes, and that it's anything but low key. I love this fic for not being a thriller - for being exactly what it needs to be: deliberate and objective. It's spooky in a very subtle way.
