His Sentinel's Spirit by Escargoat (PG-13)

Okay time to recommend something that hasn’t even got dust on it yet! ::grins::

Why this must be read: It’s a short, tense story that shows that things are not always what they seem.

One of my favorite genres is what I call “left-turn AUs”. They are those stories that start in canon, but then something changes and it goes off in a new direction. The story was written for this year’s  [livejournal.com profile] giveandtakets  fic challenge, and the prompt was “What if Incacha didn’t die in Warriors?”  Here's a taste:

By the time he had recognized and set out to correct his mistake, he had been hunted down, and his own life’s blood was seeping from him faster than any healer could staunch. His spirit had whispered to him that he could not leave Enqueri without a guide. So he had grabbed hold of Blair’s forearm and given his blessing to the uncontrolled power that curled within.

When he had woken, Incacha would have sworn that his spirit had been captured in some horrible place. It was painfully white and an annoying chirp had echoed in his ear like a devil possessed bird. But then Enqueri had appeared and explained that he and Blair had taken Incacha to a place called a hospital where healers far more powerful than those of the Chopec had managed to save his life.

It was a moment of joy and of sorrow, for while he was alive, he had given away his most powerful gift to a man who he did not know. He had given his sentinel over to another’s care.

I also have a kink for stories that give me more about minor characters, so this was a double-whammy for me. Escargoat has only been writing in TS for a short time, but she’s posted an impressive number of stories, including other minor characters (yay).  But no sequel to this so far, though it screams for one.  Perhaps we can encourage her with a little feedback! ^_^
