I'll be driving the van in May and it's a first for me. Highlander was the first fandom I went searching for when I got online in 1995.
First fandom I read fanfic in. First fandom I read slash in. (After I ran out of stories to read that weren't slash). I read all genres in Highlander: gen, het, slash, AU, MPREG, etc if they are entertaining and the writer makes me believe it.
So my recs will be eclectic in ratings, genre.
Why this must be read: This takes place in season one with a what if twist. It's a "family" fic with Duncan, Tessa and Richie before the Darkness episode. What if Richie had come into Duncan and Tessa's lives years before.
At the time it was first put online a few others writers had the same idea for an AU. Melanie Joan Riley has one "All our yesterdays" that's worth reading but Kat Parson's is my favorite. It's season one Duncan with the laughter, joy and the color Tessa brought into his life; it's a good strong Tessa story and an adorable Richie. Free Fall, The Gathering and the Darkness episodes are used.
I still adore this story. I love to discuss fanfic so feel free to comment.

I'm pretty sure there were a third story by another writer with the same "what if" idea. Couldn't remember who.
Each season has its own fic "color" for me. Season one is "family fic" with Duncan and Tessa so much in love. Season two is grief fic and Richie growing up as an Immortal. Season three well.. it's the beginning of the Methos cycle, first times, dark quickening, bronze age fic, double quickening AU of every kind, denial fic etc. I love the diversity of the fandom.
