Frayed at the Edges by Nemo (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE UNIVERSE
Pairing: The author gives "Wray/Greer, Riley/Brody, hints at Young/Rush and Young/TJ"; I think I see a few others.
Length: ~2,000 words
Author Warnings: None

Why this must be read:
I'm delighted to have found a story this good to share before I need to hand back the keys to the van. I'm going to hunker down with the rest of her oeuvre later.
The S1 episode "Divided" left the crew of Destiny in disarray, and while this was dealt with somewhat in canon, Nemo does an excellent job of filling in gaps and exploring some of the consequences of the mutiny.
I'm going to quote a bit from the middle of the story. My favorite part:
“Hey,” TJ says, coming up and resting her hands on the rail.
“Hey.”
“Nice night.”
Vanessa snorts, “Yeah, real pretty.”
They don't speak for a while; they just watch the blue lights smear themselves across the black.
“You didn't do wrong, Lieutenant.”
She sighs, great, so everyone knows. She doesn't say anything at first. Yeah, part of her wants to talk, but at the same time, if it's out in the open, it's like she can't pretend it didn't happen. Which is stupid, because it clearly had and- oh fuck it.
“I hit a civilian, TJ.”
“You had no choice.”
“I had a choice.”
“No Vanessa, you had no choice.”
She can feel TJ's gaze on her face.
“You needed to quell the crowd, and you didn't have the time to mess about, you didn't do any lasting damage. Maybe, maybe someone else might have done something different, maybe if you had to do it again, you'd do something different, but we can't live like that, no one can. Constantly second guessing, wishing. It doesn't work that way. You do the best you can in any given situation. And if you make a mistake, you learn from it. Move on.”
Vanessa turns to look at her, the play of blue lights moving haphazardly across TJ's face, filling the hollows with shadows to make her eyes glint eerily. Then she blinks, and the image fades until it's just TJ.
“Yeah.”
