Why this must be read:
In a quiet way, this packs a true punch. Penny's alone and walking home; we don't really know where she's been, we don't know what's happened. Each step is painful, set to a chronometric beat that underlines a raw determination to keep moving. For the subject matter alone, it is not an easy read, but the writing is sparse and sharp, drawing you in and keeping you there to the end, and all of it beautifully rhythmical, like something finely tuned.
A warning for implied rape, this may be triggery for readers.
The soles of her feet burn and the cramp in her right calf sends shooting pains all the way up her leg and curving across her hip. There is a bruise slowly blooming across the top of it, throbbing with each step. Her rhythm doesn’t falter, vup tup vup tup vup tup and she breathes in time with the sounds of her feet on the pavement. She counts each step as she takes it, a beat of six rather than four, her stride longer than usual in her spiky heels. Inefficient and doubtless uncomfortable, Sheldon had said when she’d asked his opinion on her choice of heels, and you won’t be doing your arches any favours.
But other than that, she’d said, checking the ensemble in her mirror. What do you think?
