Why this must be read: Okay, so. With a few exceptions, I'll read just about any pairing. But I admit that this fic moved to the top of my to-read list as soon as I saw it, because a)there's disturbingly little femmeslash in this fandom and b)Elena/Vicki struck me as bizarre and I wanted to see how it was done.
"Anything But Normal" turned out to be one of those fics that I didn't know I wanted until I read it. It's set pre-series, in the midst of Elena's grief over the death of her parents. In comes Vicki, "hazy enough to pull Elena out of her own haze just by being herself" (comment fromsummerstorm). The author not only keeps both girls in character, but manages to slip in fragments of characterization on those not central to the fic. Hopeful and a little heartbreaking.
