Why this must be read:

It’s nearly all miners and prospectors. We’ve got maybe ten families, thirty or so children that are school aged. The territorial offices won’t send us a proper teacher so Charlie drills the children in their letters and sums and in return he gets tossed surplus meat, a little baking. Occasionally some coin but most of the families can’t afford it.”

“And I’m guessing he’s not the type to turn a student away.”

“He’d have to be three days dead first.”

Suddenly Ian heard a howl in the distance. Grace stirred a little.

The problem with a lot of AU's is the characters don't fit anymore. They're either OOC or feel like they've been wedged in.

In this Wild West version of Numb3rs the characters feel right.

Don is a law man, Charlie's a math teacher, Ian's a sharp shooter and tracker, Colby's an ex soldier.

It's 90% case fic with bits taken from some early episodes so it feels more like the Numb3rs team was told by the studio that they liked the idea but thought that westerns were about to make a come back and what could they give them.

There was some effort made towards historical accuracy but nothing that gets in the way of the reading.

The slash feels almost secondary but it's still nice and it's just a nice fun read overall.
