Shades of Red: Ruby, Fire and Blood by Paxnirvana (R)
Fandom: X-MEN COMICS
Pairing: Rogue/Remy, Scott/Jean
Author on LJ:
paxnirvana
Author Website: Paxnirvana's Circle of Hell
Why this must be read:
This is just such an excellent character piece. If someone asked me to describe my perfect canon characterization for Rogue, Remy, Scott and Jean, I would point them to this fic. All the characters and events feel incredibly real, and I love the way paxnirvana works with Scott and Rogue's powers.
The disaster that the story centers around is something that I could so easily see fitting into X-men canon. The accident with Rogue's powers isn't too far off from accidents that have happened in canon, but the way the story unfolds around it takes the consequences of Rogue's mutation a few steps further than the comics have dared to.
I also feel compelled to warn you: this story is heartbreaking. It's one of the only fics that has ever made me cry. It deals with the angst that almost inevitably comes with the Rogue/Remy pairing in a way that's not heavy-handed or over-the-top dramatic, which makes the tragedy all the more poignant.
She moved slowly through the rippling waves of grass-like stuff, not concerned with defining it, just passing through it. It never impeded her unless she looked too closely at it, then it snarled and tangled about her - doubts and fears and nightmares given grasping form. She looked firmly beyond, not surprised to come suddenly across a tall slender man with brown hair. His uncovered eyes were brown as well. The weeds faded away, not daring to come close to him. A glowing golden cord stretched from his chest, his heart out into the distance, disappearing into the blackness beyond the boundaries of her mind.
This wasn't Remy.
This was Scott Summers.
