Why this must be read:
What makes this story unique is it's careful acknowledgment of the time it takes place in. Stefan is a young man in 1864. He wants to court Katherine (not date her). He worries about the propriety of their relationship and thinks they should have a chaperone when they are alone together. He knows little of sex, other than a hazy idea of what goes on between married couples. He's so naive and noble, worrying about whether his father will consent to their marriage and how the gossip will affect Katherine's reputation. And, as Stefan is holding so firmly to the social laws that govern them, Katherine defies them all.
Excerpt: Stefan is smitten. He is not the only one. George Lockwood circles her with a predator’s grace; Adam Gilbert runs to fetch her anything she requests; William and Wyatt Forbes practically trip over each other in their hurry to gain her attention. Stefan has never courted a girl before and he has certainly never fought for a girl’s favor; that is Damon’s specialty.
