Fandom Overview Update: Glee

It’s been a while since [livejournal.com profile] ashedrake wrote the fandom overview for Glee. Which leaves me with a season and a half’s worth of updates for you all! Since her overview was fantastic and thorough, and there’s no way I can live up to it, I’ll just try to fill you in on the general plot, new characters, and things that have happened to the main cast as best I can. Sorry if it’s a little long, there's a lot to cover.

General Summary
First, let’s start off with what happens in the second half of season one: there’s a lot of great drama and character development as we watch New Directions’ further struggles to actually make it to regionals. A lot of great stuff happens here, but spoilers abound for episodes 13-22 of season one, and all of season two, so don’t read any further if you don’t want to be spoiled.

The group is successful at Sectionals, despite all the drama. Finn refuses to participate once he finds out that Quinn’s baby isn’t his, but Mr. Schuester talks him into going and saving the day. Will and Emma kiss when he stops her from quitting her job. In episode 14, Finn and Rachel are dating, but he isn’t over Quinn, so he breaks up with Rachel and goes on a date with Brittany and Santana. Rachel meets another guy and starts dating him. Eventually, Finn realizes his mistake, and eventually, after a lot of drama, they get together at regionals. Season one ends with the birth of Quinn’s baby, and even though the group doesn’t win regionals, Sue is secretly nice and keeps the Glee club around. All the members express their gratitude to Mr. Schuester, and summer vacation begins.

Season two deals with a lot of the same themes as the first season, but it focuses more on the students and their issues with sexuality, self-image, and bullying. Many more characters are also introduced. While there’s still a lot of internal conflict within the club (when will there not be?), they become more of a family, and more accepting of each other as the season progresses.

Even more spoilers after this point

Main Character (adult) Updates

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison

In episode 13 (Sectionals), we discover that Will is unable to accompany the group to sectionals because he slept on a mattress they received as payment for the commercial in episode 12. In the end, he persuades an angry Finn to go and help his team. At the very end of the episode, he runs after Emma to prevent her from leaving and kisses her.

In episode 14 (Hell-O), Will and Emma try to pursue a relationship, but when Will ends up meeting with the coach of Vocal Adrenaline (Shelby Corcoran) and they end up making out at his apartment. Will and Emma plan to sleep together and even though Emma runs out, Will is happy she knew when to admit she wasn’t ready. In Funk, Will says that he will help Emma with her problems as soon as his divorce with Terri is finalized. And in the final episode of the season, Will admits that he has loved Emma all this time while she reveals that she is dating her dentist.

In season two, Will strikes up an alliance with Sue against the new football coach, but he eventually realizes that an alliance with Sue can only be evil, so he sides with Beiste. Will also takes a series of foolish actions to impress Emma, and to get her away from her new boyfriend, Carl. This includes buying a new car, and performing Britney Spears and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. In the Substitute, Will comes down with monkey flu and sleeps with Terri when she comes over to take care of him. He ends their relationship when she becomes jealous of Holly Holliday, a substitute he later dates for a short while before she breaks it off because she is a free spirit. Will is also offered the chance to perform in April’s Broadway musical, CrossRhodes, and Emma tells him he should go.

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)

The biggest things for Sue in the second half of season one are making a music video with Olivia Newton-John, and voting for the glee club at regionals. She’s still evil, even when she’s being nice, but over the course of the season, she learns a thing or two from her sister. She also blackmails principal Figgins to reverse her suspension.

In season two, Sue is appointed acting principal when Figgins comes down with the flu. The school board is very impressed with her performance, but she resigns when they refuse to uphold her expulsion of Dave Karofsky because she can better protect Kurt as a teacher than as principal. After she learns that Rod Remington and Andrea Carmichael have become engaged, she announces her intention to marry herself, and her Nazi hunting mother makes an appearance. During a period of depression, Emma persuades her to join the glee club. Her energy renewed, she takes over Aural Intensity, but they lose regionals to New Directions.

In Funeral, Sue’s sister Jean dies. Unable to deal with planning a funeral, the glee kids plan it for her. Despite this overall negative experience, she learns a lot from the experience. She becomes closer to Becky, and she stops trying to sabotage the glee club.

Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays)

Emma continues to be the voice of reason for the series. She may have a hard time dealing with her own problems, but she can see when someone else is making a mistake. In episode 15, she initially plans to sleep with Will, but she backs down. Later, when she learns he has kissed another woman, she verbally berates him in the staff room and terminates their relationship. Shortly after, she starts dating her dentist, Carl Howell.

In season two, they have a shotgun wedding in Las Vegas, but still have not slept together. They try to talk about it with Holly Holliday, the sex ed teacher, and both Carl and Emma realize that she still has feelings for Will. When Carl leaves her, the stress makes her OCD worse, and Will tells her he will be there for her no matter what.

Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher)
In episode one of the second season, Principal Figgins says that Ken Tanaka had a nervous breakdown over the summer and won’t be coming back.

Jean Sylvester (Robin Trocki)

Jean continues to give Sue the best advice possible, until her death at the end of season two.

Carole Hudson (Romy Rosemont)
Finn’s mom was introduced in season one, but in the second half of season one, she starts dating Kurt’s dad, and in season two, they get married.

Burt Hummel (Mike O’Malley)
Burt is a very positive, realistic example of how a straight guy living in rural Ohio would deal with his gay son. He deals with all of his discomfort as best he can, but he never lets his own issues get in the way of loving Kurt. He even kicks Finn out of the house after Finn makes some homophobic remarks. Burt knows it might cost him Carole, but Kurt is his son first.

There’s a lot more of Burt dealing with Kurt being gay onscreen in season two. He has to give his son the talk, and while he’s not comfortable with that stuff, he tries to do his best (with a little prodding from Blaine). Even though Burt is awkward and is upfront about it, he makes it clear that it’s not anything do to with Kurt, but his own issues he has to deal with.

Main Character Updates: teens (in order of when they joined glee)

Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley)

Mercedes continues to be a diva and, dismayed at their lack of solos, she and Kurt join the Cheerios as vocalists in the Power of Madonna. In Home, Sue tells her that she must wear a skirt and lose some weight, so she tries dieting. Quinn tells her that she’s beautiful, and she should be proud of her body. The two later develop a friendship. She and Puck date briefly because he wants to boost his reputation, but she breaks up with him and quits the Cheerios because she’s afraid of becoming someone she’s not.

In season two, her friendship with Kurt goes through a rough patch after an argument about religion, but they get over it. Season two also sees more of Mercedes singing: she teams up with Santana in Duets, and she writes her own song “Hell to the No” in original song. In a Night of Neglect, her diva attitude comes out when Lauren Zizes becomes her agent. Mercedes also befriends Rachel in this season. The two of them have sleepovers (with Kurt), and Mercedes teaches her the value in being single. But the season finale reveals she has been dating Sam Evans, fellow gleeclubber, in secret.

Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)

Kurt joins the Cheerios with Mercedes, but instead of quitting with her, he stays on and sings a solo that helps them win the national cheerleading competition. Even though Kurt was initially pleased by his dad and Finn’s mom dating, when Finn starts to find common ground with his dad, Kurt begins to doubt himself. He dresses in flannel and dates Brittany for a few days before Burt reminds him that he’ll love Kurt no matter what. After this, Kurt becomes the biggest supporter of his dad and Carole. Unfortunately, Finn and Kurt don’t get along particularly well at first, partially due to Kurt’s crush on Finn.

In early season two, Kurt’s dad has a heart attack, and we see the entire glee club support him, showing just how much they’ve grown since last season. Even if they don’t support him in a way he approves of. Finn and Kurt still have their issues, mostly over a new glee club member named Sam, which surface in the episode Duets. Instead of singing with Sam, Kurt sings a duet by himself, and Rachel notices how unhappy he is. She reminds him they are all there for him, and the two sing a duet together. This is just the start of a great friendship that spans season two, and one of the best to come out of this season.

Unfortunately, even their combined efforts can’t stop the bullying Kurt goes through every day, and after his dad and Carole get married in Furt, he transfers to Dalton Academy. At Dalton, Kurt joins the Warblers (ND’s competition at sectionals), and, after a somewhat tumultuous start, he and Blaine kiss in Original Song. Kurt transfers back to McKinley in Born This Way, when Karofsky and Santana team up to make the school safe from bullying. Since the school is now safe, Kurt brings Blaine to the Junior prom, but Kurt is forced to realize that bullying is more than just getting shoved around in the hallways. He gets through it, and he and Blaine dance together to Dancing Queen. In the season Finale, New York, he and Rachel sneak into the Gershwin Theater and sing For Good together, one of the moments that best showcases their new friendship.

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)

Artie and Tina start dating in the second half of season one. They have a pretty cute relationship, even though they started out kind of rocky. Unfortunately, this relationship doesn’t make it to season two. Tina breaks up with Artie over the summer because of his inattentiveness and lack of abs, which leads Artie to try and join the football team. Eventually, he is successful, and the team uses him as a battering ram. He also forms an unlikely friendship with Puck, which results in Artie dating Brittany. Artie treats Brittany like gold until he realizes Santana also wants to be with her. This conflict leads to their break-up.

Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)

After she admits she doesn’t actually have a stutter, Tina becomes a strong, forceful teenager. She gives Artie a lecture about how she is a strong, powerful woman after he objectifies her, and she even convinces Figgins that she is a vampire so she can keep wearing her goth clothing. This only works because Figgins seems to think vampires are real. Tina and Mike currently have the longest lasting relationship on the show.

Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)

Season one sees a continuation of Rachel’s angelic voice, accompanied by her grating personality. She so desperately wants friends and a boyfriend, but she’s not entirely sure what she’s messing up. She dates Jesse St. James throughout the second half of season one, until she tries to change her image in Bad Reputation, and she ends up hurting Jesse, Finn, and Puck. He does help her find her birth mother, Shelby Corcoran, but he also humiliates her before returning to his team. At regionals, Finn confesses his feelings to her before they sing Faithfully, and they start dating.

We see Finn and Rachel still in a pretty stable (for high schoolers) relationship up until Special Education. When Rachel learns Finn slept with Santana the previous year, and then lied about it, Rachel makes out with Puck as a form of revenge. When Finn learns about this, he breaks up with her. She goes through a lot of self-image issues after Finn starts dating Quinn again, but she gets over them with the help of the glee club. She and Finn are also dating again by the end of season two.

While season one focuses mostly on Rachel’s romantic problems (and season two does a great deal as well), she finally figures out some of the basics for making friends. Underneath that bossy, diva exterior is a girl with a heart of gold who genuinely cares about her fellow club members. She helps Kurt through a rough patch, and forms a friendship with him, something that they maintain even while he’s at Dalton. Rachel also befriends Mercedes, and their friendship even makes it through one or two fights. In season two, Rachel has matured, and she understands that sometimes, you have to put other people first.

Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith)

The most life changing events to happen to Finn in late season one are sleeping with Santana, realizing he wants to date Rachel, and dating Rachel. Finn doesn’t do much growing relationship-wise, but he does get over some of his issues with Kurt. He yells at Kurt (not without provocation), and eventually realizes where he was wrong, which leads him to stick up for Kurt whenever he gets bullied instead of just not participating.

Unfortunately, this attitude is somewhat short-lived. Finn’s decline in popularity leads him to stop sticking up for Kurt because he’s afraid it might jeopardize his position as quarterback. Of course, Finn is ultimately a good guy, and he sticks up for Kurt and apologizes to him at their parents’ wedding.

Season two is not a good season for Finn. Rachel kisses Puck, and they break up. Then he convinces Quinn to cheat on Sam, who is very hurt when he finds out. At the very end of the season, he breaks up with Quinn because he still has feelings for Rachel, a very good move, and by the end of the season, he and Rachel are back together. This was a difficult year for Finn, but he sort of redeems himself by the end.

Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron)

Quinn goes through a pretty tough time after she gets kicked off the Cheerios, but by the end of season one, she’s formed a solid friendship with Mercedes, made some important self discoveries, and kind of figured things out with Puck.

She tries, and successfully rejoins the Cheerios at the beginning of season two, by betraying Santana. Shortly after being reinstated, she starts dating Sam. When faced with the choice of glee or the Cheerios, she picks glee, and stays off the squad for the remainder of the season. Quinn is also plagued by a few bad decisions this season, one of which is cheating on Sam with Finn. She gets what she wants out of Finn for a while, until he breaks up with her.

Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera)

Santana is very adept at insults and tearing people down, but she’s got feelings down there somewhere. She even cries a little when the club sings its farewell song to Mr. Schue.

Season two Santana is much the same as season one, but she ends the season with a few tentative friendships, in spite of all her bitchy behaviour throughout the season. The biggest problem for her in season two is Brittany-and how she feels about Brittany. Santana loves Brittany, something she finally comes to terms with by the end of the season, but she’s still afraid of being bullied. Santana’s struggle with her sexuality is extremely realistic and heartbreaking.

Brittany S. Pierce (Heather Morris)

Brittany loves seemingly unconditionally. She doesn’t let popularity get in her way, and is well-meaning and good hearted. Season two makes it clear that Brittany is unashamed of the fact that she likes both boys and girls, and she even dates Artie for the majority of the season. While she loves Santana, she also loves Artie, and can’t bring herself to break up with him, but she consistently urges Santana to be herself.

Noah “Puck” Puckerman (Mark Salling)

Puck and Finn have a falling out after Finn discovers Puck is the father of Quinn’s baby. He seems to feel genuinely guilty, but he also seems to love Quinn and want to start a family with her. By the end of season one, they’ve hashed out their differences, and both are as satisfied as they can be with the decision to give the baby up. Finn and Puck also become tentative friends again.

Season two proves that Puck has matured, at least a little bit. When Rachel comes to him to make Finn jealous, Puck makes out with her for a while, before realizing he can’t do this to Finn again. He also befriends Artie (as a part of his community service), and ends up going through a period of self doubt after he gets locked in a port-a-potty while trying to defend Kurt. It’s at this point he falls for Lauren Zizes. And he works really hard to keep her interested, which is no easy feat. He even writes her a song called “Big-ass Heart.”

Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.)

This football player, who was initially afraid to dance outside his room, becomes a more prominent member of glee club in season two. He’s even more vocal, and he develops friendships with Sam, and Kurt. He also sings for the first time, something he has absolutely no confidence to do. He sings a duet with Tina, and it is well received. Mike also stands up for Kurt against Karofsky, even though he gets hurt in the process.

New Characters

Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet)

Sam is a new transfer student to McKinley. He’s also a bit of a nerd with a fondness for impersonations. In the first episode of season two, Finn notices how he enjoys ND’s performance, and he persuades Sam to try out for glee. Sam is also on the football team. Initially, he decides not to join glee because it won’t be good for his popularity or his new position as quarterback. He officially joins the club in Duets.

Sam is a good guy, who deals surprisingly well with the craziness that is being a member of glee. Despite his concern for his reputation, he has no problem with Kurt, and even sticks up for him. And his relationship with Quinn was so sweet, it gives you cavities. He has a lot of relationship drama with Quinn and Santana before he ends up secretly dating Mercedes and it’s nice to see something go his way.

Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones)

Beiste is the new football coach, who replaces Coach Tanaka after his nervous breakdown. She is a no-nonsense person and a very successful football coach. Because of her past successes, Figgins boosts the football budget, reducing the Cheerios and Glee budgets. She handles a lot of teasing and bullying from Will and Sue with unexpected grace, although she does boot Finn off the team when she thinks he’s mocking her.

Over the season, Beiste becomes a good friend to Will, helping through some troubled times, and she plays an important role in preserving Brittany’s belief in Santa Clause by buying Artie a ReWalk (linkage) anonymously. And when there’s a lot of tension between the football team and glee, she forces her football team to join the club for a week, and they all perform Thriller/Heads Will Roll mashup at a game.

Overall, Besite is a great replacement for Ken Tanaka. She’s kind and compassionate, but she knows when to be tough, which is just what some of these people need.

Sunshine Corazon (Charice)

A foreign exchange student from the Philippines, she is a great singer who wants to join the glee club, but after singing a duet with her, Rachel is afraid she’ll lose all her solos to Sunshine, so she sabotages her audition. She is then approached by the coach of Vocal Adrenaline, and transfers out of McKinley. She makes a few other appearances throughout the season, and helps Vocal Adrenaline place in the top ten at Nationals.

Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink)

A member of the AV club, Rachel initially recruits Lauren in season one to find out if the other members aren’t carrying their weight. Lauren is a no-nonsense Greco-Roman wrestling state champion who knows exactly what she wants, and usually gets it. She also has a love of candy and is a fan of the Twilight books. She joins the glee club in Special Education so that the club can meet member requirements for sectionals. Even though she claims that singing is stupid, she often sings in the background, and she sang her first solo in Comeback. Puck admires her for being a bigger bad-ass than he is, and after she says he does nothing for her (during 7 minutes in heaven), he tries to get her to go out with him. They eventually start dating, and despite their failed bid at prom king and queen, they are still a couple at the end of the season.

Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss)

Blaine is the self-assured, openly gay leader of the Warblers, the acapella group at Dalton Academy, an all-boys school. Blaine starts off as a mentor for Kurt, and he seems very sure of his sexual identity. At first, Blaine seems like an ideal role model, and a great mentor who always offers good advice. Blaine is also oblivious to Kurt’s crush on him until Kurt confesses, at which point Blaine says he doesn’t want to ruin their friendship.

The limits of their friendship, however, are tested in Blame it on the Alcohol, when Blaine kisses Rachel during a drunken game of spin the bottle and starts to think he might be bi. He kisses Rachel again when he’s sober and concludes that he is, indeed, gay. Right before regionals, Kurt sings a solo to mourn for Parvotti, the bird he was watching, and Blaine realizes he reciprocates Kurt’s feelings. He confesses, and they sing a duet together at regionals.

Blaine may not be perfect, but he’s a good source of stability for Kurt. He even confronts Burt when he feels Burt could do something better, which takes a lot of guts.

Dave Karofsky (Max Adler)

Obviously, Dave isn’t a new character, but he gets a lot more screen time in season two. All he does up until Never Been Kissed is bully Kurt and the other members of New Directions. In Never Been Kissed, he pushes Kurt too far, Kurt fights back and Karofsky kisses Kurt. Unfortunately, this doesn’t stop his bullying; in fact, it gets worse, forcing Kurt to transfer.

Even though Karofsky can’t come to terms with being gay, especially not in public, he does realize the negative results of his actions in Born This Way. He goes along with Santana to create an anti-bullying squad, and apologizes to Kurt. Karofsky is a complex, realistic character, and I hope he eventually feels comfortable being himself.

Glee has so many important guest stars, they get their own section!

Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel)

Coach of Vocal Adrenaline in season one and Rachel’s biological mother. She makes out with Will shortly after meeting him, but doesn’t sleep with him because his divorce isn’t final. In Dream On (ep. 19), it is revealed that she is Rachel’s biological mother, but she’s not allowed to contact Rachel directly until she turns 18. Shelby means well, but she’s not sure how to deal with an adult Rachel, who has many memories of her dads, and none of Shelby. Will encourages her to think about what she can be for Rachel, and at the end of the season, Shelby adopts Quinn’s baby and names her Beth.

Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff)

Rachel’s boyfriend, and star of Vocal adrenaline. Jesse is kind of a jack-ass, but deep down, he genuinely cares about Rachel. He is enlisted by Shelby to slip a recording to Rachel because Shelby cannot contact her directly. He also transfers to McKinley for her to reduce some of the tension that being on opposing teams caused. Once Shelby and Rachel have acknowledged each other’s place in their lives, Jesse returns to Vocal Adrenaline, but not before egging Rachel in the parking lot. He returns briefly in season two and attends prom with Rachel. Mr. Schue also hires him to help with ND’s training before Nationals.

Bryan Ryan (Neil Patrick Harris)

http://pics.livejournal.com/fincalian/pic/00058hqf">

First, who doesn’t love NPH? Bryan Ryan is Will’s high school nemesis, and they were in glee club together. In Dream On, he is a school board member who wants to cut the budget for glee club out of revenge. In the end, he and Will become tentative friends, then enemies again when Will gets the part for Jean Valjean. When Will gives up the role, Bryan decides not to cut the glee club.

April Rhodes (Kristen Chenoweth)

April continues to be her crazy self for her return appearances. In Home, Will finds out that she’s sleeping with a rich, married man. When he dies suddenly, she receives a large amount of hush money, so she buys the school an auditorium. She returns in season two to get Will’s help with her new show, CrossRhodes.

Carl Howell (John Stamos)

Emma’s boyfriend and dentist. He is introduced in episode 2 (Britney/Brittany). He is a nice guy who cares a lot about Emma, and he puts some serious work into helping her get over her OCD. He knows she still has feelings for Will, and that Will still likes Emma, but he’s fairly tolerant of them spending time together. He and Emma marry in Special Education in Las Vegas, but after Emma promotes abstinence with the song “Afternoon Delight,” Carl schedules a session with the school’s sex education counsellor, Holly Holliday. Carl reveals they haven’t yet consummated their four month old marriage, and Emma says she still has feelings for Will. Shortly after, Carl asks for an annulment.

Holly Holliday (Gwyneth Paltrow)

A substitute at McKinley, her first appearance is in the Substitute. She takes over the glee club at the request of Kurt when Will is out sick, and befriends many of the members of the club. The students love her because she’s fun, but she has a hard time with responsibility, and she feels as though she failed Mercedes as a teacher. She and Will talk it over, and she helps him make glee a little bit more fun.

She makes return appearances in Sexy and A Night of Neglect. In Sexy, she begins dating Will, but breaks it off in A Night of Neglect because she knows he’s in love with Emma.

New Main Pairings

Canon: Mike/Tina, Sam/Quinn, Jesse/Rachel, Will/Holly, Brittany/Artie, Sam/Santana, Santana/Brittany, Kurt/Blaine, Emma/Carl

Hey, Don't Judge Me

Whew, that's a lot of stuff. If I'm missing anything, please let me know! I'm not good with twitter or tumbler!

[identity profile] jirel.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of the show but of the music. Still, I saw a lot of season 2 during a daylong show of all episodes and enjoyed reading up on what had happened before and since. The teen-aged angst drives me crazy (doesn't it do that to all 50+ people) but the music is fantastic. Thanks for the update.

Thank you!

Hey, Don't Judge Me (http://heydontjudgeme.com/tag/glee/) is doing recaps for a Season 1 rewatch, complete with custom cocktails and a drinking game. Pace yourself -- those free spaces on the bingo card are killer!
