Why this must be read:

A road trip fic like no other, this is one of my favorite stories in the fandom. It captures a perfect quiet mood throughout, giving us a Stefan & Elena who are miserable and scared and tired and playful and in love all at the same time. The best part about the story is it's attention to detail that adds a layer of realism. Whether these two are fighting over the radio or playing the liscence plate game or stopping to see the world's biggest ball of twine, it always just feels like what two people on a road trip would really feel like. It captures a mood of day-to-day tediousness without the story ever staggering under its weight.

Of course, it's not just a road trip; they are on the run from Klaus. Elena's emotional struggle is quite well done, especially her guilt at leaving so many people behind and how she wishes she could stay to fight while they all ran away. And Stefan as her silent support throughout. A brilliant look at these characters and their relationship.

Also, there's line-dancing.

An Excerpt

She thinks breakfast -- dinner, it's almost five -- is supposed to make her feel better. The restaurant has pancakes twenty-four hours. Stefan orders Belgian waffles with extra whipped cream. He eats a few bites and then sticks with his coffee. He's quiet, like he's waiting for Elena to say something.

She doesn't. All she can think of is Jeremy's hands fisted at the small of her back as he hugged her goodbye, Damon's face as they were leaving, their silhouettes through the windows as they drove away. The memory hurts, like someone is squeezing her insides. Suddenly she isn't hungry anymore.

Stefan sets his hand on the tabletop next to hers, just close enough so their pinkies are touching. They sit like that for a long time, not talking, not eating, barely touching. Surprisingly, it helps. Sort of.
