From Here to Eternity by Ginny and Hestia (G)

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 11 pages
Author on LJ: Not known on lj
Author Website: Not online as far as I know, but here is a list of Ginny's Pros stories and a list of Hestia's Pros stories
Why this must be read: Because it's one of the funniest, happiest Pros stories I know, despite the fact that Doyle is dead. In fact the problem is not so much that Doyle is dead, as that Bodie isn't and as Doyle was promised by Processing that Bodie would be with him shortly, he's determined to make sure that he is. Ginny and Hestia have got a lovely touch between them - there's a sadness to this story too, because it isn't a pastiche or a caricature, it's a gentle comedy about how much the lads must be together, but whilst you're aching for Bodie alone in his bed, you're smiling ruefully along with Doyle, and giggling at the pigeons and the poor old spaniel. It's another hug of a fic that will leave you smiling, I promise!

It's also another story that's currently, sadly, only available in a zine, but the zine that it's in is choc-full of other fab Pros stories, and well-worth the price from Gryphon Press (who I've only ever known to respond quickly, honestly and efficiently). Contact details can be found via the link below.

Excerpt: Ahead of him in the gloom, he saw Bodie walking with a concentration only the inebriated can achieve. Ray's eyes scanned ahead. The whole street was totally empty. There were no speeding cars, no burning buildings, not a single terrorist toting bomb, gun or grenade. Nothing life-threatening at all. He sighed. Where were they when you needed them? Then...

There!

Hallelujah! Barely visible in the rain and darkness lay a hole in the pavement, courtesy of British Telecom. No warning lantern glowed. Quickly he flew ahead of his partner and peered down. Deep. Very deep. Should do nicely.

Returning, he paced Bodie's deliberate steps.

"That's it sunshine. Left. Right. Left. Right. Now, a little more to one side..."

He moved behind the broad back and took a bead on the hole ahead. Five more steps and I'll be ready, he thought gleefully, lips puckered and arms outstretched.

Shaking with excitement, he hovered at Bodie's left shoulder.

"C'mon love. Only a few more seconds."

Left, right, left - then Bodie faltered. Right foot crossing over left, his body swayed, and Doyle screamed in frustration as, barely missing the hole, Bodie sloped off at a tangent ten degrees to his left. Furiously disappointed, he squinted through the rain after his drunken lover.

"Fuckin' hell, Bodie! Can't you do anything right?"

In his anger he almost missed the sound of scurrying footsteps along the pavement behind him - footsteps that stopped abruptly to be followed by a choked-off wail of surprise.

Suddenly a man in his sixties appeared at his elbow, a puzzled expression on his face. the chap was looking directly at him. "Hello," he offered hopefully.

Ray gulped. Oh shit. He cleared his throat.

"Ah. Sorry, mate," he said apologetically. "Lousy visibility, isn't it?"

Right, sold. I was just thinking "I am out of reading matter..." and I have had nothing but good things from Gryphon.

Each of these authors has two stories on the Proslib CD. They're all great, but one in particular is one of my favourites, and if ever I drive this van, it is so going to be stop number one.

Popping back almost a year later...

I am now driving it, and it was stop number one (http://crack-van.livejournal.com/5511170.html) :)

Also, I did buy the Celebrations zine on the basis of this rec, and it was well worth it. Thanks for the rec!
