Fandom Overview: Power Rangers (Part 2)

Previously, on Power Rangers - I wrote an overview for the first five seasons. For some reason I volunteered to update it for seasons six through eighteen.

And did I mention that starting with season seven, we get an entirely NEW cast EVERY SINGLE SEASON? Yeah, this thing is super image heavy. And probably you don't remember anything after Tommy leaves. (Although he comes back.) But while the later seasons may not have been as popular as the earlier ones, they're still pretty great!

SO. There is really no way to do this as nearly as in-depth as the original overview, but I will try! (And this thing is over 5,000 words long and REALLY image heavy. Sorry!)

(From left to right - Carlos, Cassie, Andros, Ashley, TJ)

This season is best remembered for well, being awesome. And for the Rangers losing. And for Bulk and Skull being BIG DAMN HEROES. Seriously, it's one of the best seasons of Power Rangers, because they thought they were going to be cancelled, so they were going to go out with a bang. Instead they saved the show.

Carlos - Is emo. Was Ashley's beard for an episode. Quit briefly just as an excuse to bring Adam back for an episode. Gets blackmailed by a tiny child after he morphs in a photo booth. Shipped with Ashley and Andros.
Cassie - Is awesome. Wants to be Tina Turner. Should seriously make out with TJ, Astronema or Ashley.
Andros - The emoest emo ranger with the saddest sad in all the land. Looking for his missing sister who (spoiler) is totally the villain of the season. Canonically with Ashley, but he should totally make out with Zhane. Oh, and he's telekinetic.
Ashley - Should be on Project Runway, since she's a fashion designer. Has been involved with Carlos, Andros, and Zhane. Also, there was a bodyswap episode with Astronema, which was GREAT.
TJ - the strategist of the team, and freaking awesome. Seriously, he is smarter then everyone else on the team.

Not pictured:
Zhane - the Silver Ranger. Dates Astronema. Flirts with Ashley. Should totally make out with Andros.
Astronema - The best part of the season and an AWESOME villain. She's secretly Andros's kidnapped sister Karone. Changes her hair a lot and wears a lot of leather. Is AMAZING.

(From left to right - Kendrix, Kai, Maya, Leo, Damon. Not pictured - Mike, Trakeena, Karone)

This season suffers from following a really awesome season. And from plot holes. After the last season's success in space, they figured they'd do another space themed season! Of course, the footage they got was jungle themed. This worked about as well as you'd think. Usually I summarize this season as "the one where Maya explains the concept of polyamory and Leo rips his shirt off a lot. Basically, they're headed out on the first space colony when they accidentally end up pulling some swords out of stones and they become Rangers.

Kendrix - The smart one! You go, Pink Rangers! Mostly shipped with Maya or Mike. Dies at one point (she gets better).
Maya - Jungle girl from the planet Miranoi. Has a telepathic bond with their sentient zords. Mostly shipped with Kendrix or Damon.
Kai - He plays by the rules, fights with swords, and he bakes. Also, he and Leo are pretty much married.
Damon - The mechanic. Married Trakeena in real life. Is awesome. Mostly shipped with Maya (or Trakeena once people figured out they were married.)
Leo - A stowaway! Takes his shirt off a LOT in a dramatic fashion. Pretty much married to Kai. Feels guilt about his brother dying (he gets better.) Wasn't originally chosen to be a Ranger and he also angsts about that.
Mike - Leo's brother. Originally pulls the red sword, but then he dies. He comes back later and gets to be the sixth Ranger (Magna defender.) SUPER HOT.
Karone - Astronema from last season. Yes, really. She got turned good, and becomes the new pink ranger after Kendrix dies. Wears a lot of leather and should hook up with EVERYONE.
Trakeena - The villain. She gets character development! And then she gets possessed by another villain and turns green. Whatever.

Oh yeah, at some point they get thrown into a lost galaxy for like, 2 episodes. The writers totally forgot what the season was called.

(Dana, Joel, Carter, Chad, Kelsey. Not pictured - Ryan and Angela Fairweather.)

This season is military themed, mostly. The team gets recruited within a military organization to fight some demons (one of whom really CANNOT ACT). For some reason the military decided that a firefighter and dolphin trainer were awesome options. Sure!

Dana - the Captain's daughter. Her brother is secretly evil. Wants to be a doctor. Shipped with Carter and Kelsey.
Kelsey - is a daredevil. Is pretty much coded as a lesbian - she and civilian Nancy are pretty awesome.
Chad - trains dolphins? He's also the best fighter of the team, and for some reason he has a romance with a mermaid. I don't even know. He's also my favorite, and he and Kelsey should be BFF.
Joel - is um, a jackass. He's a stunt pilot who spends the whole season harassing Ms. Fairweather, and is rewarded by getting to marry her. YMMV.
Carter Grayson - Is secretly related to Dick Grayson. Firefighter. Was saved by the Captain as a kid. Runs monsters over with his car. Badass but a little bland. Shipped mostly with Dana or Ryan.
Ryan - the captain's son. Saved/captured by the demons as a child (it's complicated) where he was raised by them. Was an evil Ranger, but then he realized his dad did love him, so he turned good. At that point he gets possessed by a demon snake tattoo (it's complicated) that involves a lot of him ripping his shirt off and Carter staring at him. Is great.
Ms. Fairweather - the tech. Invented all the Ranger stuff. Is shipped with Joel. Personally, I think she should hook up with Dana.

(Katie, Trip, Jen, Wes, Lucas. Not pictured - Eric, Alex, Ransik, Nadira.)

Time Force is GREAT. It is amazing and wonderful and every single character is amazing. In the year 3,000 the Rangers (Alex, Jen, Katie, Trip and Lucas) are chasing mutant criminal Ransik and his daughter Nadira. Alex, who is Jen's fiance, is killed, and Ransik and Nadira escape to the year 2001, with the other Rangers chasing after them. There they meet Alex's identical ancestor, Wes, and his foe-yay boyfriend, Eric. And it is AMAZING.

Jen - Pink Ranger and leader of the team. Yes, leader. She is awesome and looks really hot in leather. In a time-crossed romance with Wes, and she kicks a lot of ass. Seriously, she is amazing.
Wes - Red Ranger and poor little rich boy with ALL THE DADDY ISSUES. Also, he and Eric went to prep school together before Eric dumped him.
Katie - super strong and the nicest person ever. Also, she wants to be in a musical and she loves her family. She has a sad inside! She and Trip are the most adorable.
Trip - Telepathic alien. Pretty much married to Katie. Really adorable, and the tech of the team.
Lucas - Race car driver. Has an absolutely adorable romance with Nadira.
Eric - Is hot. No, okay, the long version. Eric is the scholarship kid from Wes's prep school that really just wants to prove himself and to fit in and for people to tell him that they love him. He's determined to be the best and to do it on his own, and he ends up the sixth Ranger with an AMAZING zord, and he's snarky and sarcastic and WONDERFUL and eventually he learns that he has FRIENDS. Basically, he is the greatest.
Alex - Jen's dead fiance from the future. (he gets better.)
Ransik - The villain! He's played by Vernon Wells and is a delightful over-the-top hammy villain who is really just a victim of a society that hates and fears him. And he loves his daughter a lot.
Nadira - Ransik's daughter. Spoiled and adorable. Her date with Lucas is the greatest.

(Danny, Max, Cole, Alyssa, Taylor. Not pictured - Merrick, Animus, Princess Shayla, Jindrax, Toxica)

The first Disney season! Wild Force is... pretty much Captain Planet. Well, it's the save the environment season of PR. Reappearance of evil Orgs awakens a princess on a magical floating island, and one of them has the power of heart. Yeah. It's not a bad season, but it suffers from following an AMAZING season. However, there is a lot to love about Wild Force.

There are approximately 500 Zords in this season, but since one of them is an armadillo zord that gets used as a soccer ball, it is TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Cole - Since Cole is a red lion ranger, like Leo, he rips his shirt off in a dramatic fashion. He's the son of scientists who were murdered in the Amazon, so he was raised by the local tribe and then he paddled a canoe to Colorado to find his family. And he can sense an animal's heart.
Taylor - Taylor is the HBIC. She's an airforce pilot and she was the leader until Cole showed up. She's awesome, and likes rules, and punches Cole. She also gets an adorable romance with Eric during the TF/WF crossover.
Alyssa - Alyssa is the nice one, but she also has the martial arts skills to back it up. She still manages to take college classes during all of this, and is incredibly talented.
Max - Max is the youngest of the team, and he's really good at bowling. He's the sense of humor/heart of the team, and when the season ends he goes off on a round the world honeymoon with Danny. (Seriously, they are adorable, and yell "Never Give Up!" at each other a lot.)
Danny - Danny is a gentle giant, and he's a florist. He and Max are married. He sleeps with a teddy bear, and is great.
Princess Shayla - Princess of Animaria from 3,000 years ago. Went to sleep, then woke up to give the Rangers their powers. Totally in love with Merrick, and sings a song to a deer.
Merrick - One of Shayla's guards from 3,000 years ago. Possessed by an evil wolf mask and is evil for the first part of the season. He gets better.
Animus - Is Captain Planet.
Jindrax and Toxica - The comic relief villains who are also married. Why isn't there more fic about them?

Wild Force is mostly known for the episode Forever Red, in which 9 Red Rangers + Eric the Quantum Ranger team up to fight the Beetleborgs. It's pretty epic.

(Cam, Dustin, Tori, Shane, Hunter, Blake. Not pictured - Marah, Kapri, Lothor, Sensei Guinea Pig)

The first New Zealand season! Ninja Storm suffered a bit from the change, but the season is pretty much a comedy season. It's also EXTREME with all of the Rangers (except Cam) doing some sort of EXTREME sport. Dustin, Tori and Shane are the failbot students at a ninja school, but they end up becoming Rangers when everyone else is kidnapped and their sensei is turned into a guinea pig. Blake and Hunter are brothers from another school who start out evil and get better. Cam is tech support turned sixth ranger turned PURE AWESOME.

Oh, and the season is secretly Avatar: The Last Airbender, what with the elemental control.

Shane - Is the Red Ranger. He skateboards. Has the power of air.
Tori - the only girl on the team (saaaaaaaaaad. Disney stops the tradition of making sure there are at least two girls on the team, even if they have to turn one of the male Rangers in the sentai into a girl for the American version. Disney, I am disappointed.) Anyway, Tori surfs and doesn't believe in Power Rangers until she becomes one. Has the power of water.
Dustin - Dirtbikes. Says "dude" a lot. Reads comics. The comic relief. Power of Earth.
Blake and Hunter - The Thunder Rangers. Adopted, evil but gets better. Also dirtbike. Blake has a giant crush on Tori, which is adorable.
Cam - THE BEST. He is the snarky and sarcastic tech support son of the sensei, who just wants to be a Ranger. Ends up doing some weird time travel thing to become the green Samurai Ranger. (There will be another one later. It's complicated.)
Cyber!Cam - The weird holorobot thing that Cam creates to run ninja ops after he becomes a Ranger.
Sensei Guinea Pig - Cam's dad and the sensei for the main three. Got turned into a guinea pig.
Lothor - Sensei Guinea Pig's brother. Mostly comic relief and a fairly incompetent villain. Breaks the fourth wall a lot.
Marah and Kapri - Lothor's nieces. Ditzes who are smarter then they pretend to be. They switch sides a LOT.

(Kira, Conner, Ethan, Tommy, Trent. Not pictured - Anton Mercer/Mesogog, Elsa, Hayley, Cassidy and Devon)

The season mostly known for bringing back Tommy "needed a fourth color" Oliver. (You know, the Green, White, Red and then Red Again Ranger.) This time, apparently he has his PhD in dinosaurs by age 24, and he has the tech skills to create Power Rangers. AHAHAHA. But yeah, new!PhD Dr. O moves to Reefside where he starts teaching high school, and ends up having to take 3 kids to a museum for detention, where they accidentally stumble upon his secret lab and become Power Rangers. Then he gets a fourth color. Things get complicated.

Conner - The leader. He plays soccer and starts out as sexist asshole. He gets better. In fact, he's AWESOME, and gets all the power-ups in the world. He also has UST with every single Ranger.
Kira - The only girl on the team (AGAIN, WHAT IS WITH THAT DISNEY???) makes up for it by being amazing. She sings, calls out Conner on his bullshit, and is just all around amazing.
Ethan - the geek. Super hacker who is way more concerned with computer games and computers then anything else, but a super competent and great Ranger.
Tommy - As previously mentioned, he's back. This is my personal favorite version of Tommy, where he ends up being a fairly faily mentor, who ends up getting trapped in his suit for half the season. Also, he's REALLY hot with the short hair.
Trent - His father is the big bad, and he spends half the season evil and possessed by his dino gem. He gets better, but the parallels between him and Tommy are great. Also, Trent has a clone. He's also an artist, and he really loves his dad. It's adorable. He and Kira also make a super great couple, when he isn't having some serious UST with Conner.
Elsa - the principal, who is also evil. What, like you didn't suspect that?
Anton Mercer/Mesogog - Tommy's ex-boyfriend/business partner, who is now possessed by Mesogog, who is a dinosaur that wants to bring back the age of dinosaurs. Mesogog is SUPER KINKY and spends most of his time playing with his minions and threatening Tommy. Anton is conflicted and angsty, and also really rich.
Hayley - the tech. She's a genius rocket scientist who got bored at MIT and opened up a cyber-cafe because she likes people. Is the brains of the operation.
Cassidy - The Libby. She wants to be a reporter, and she spends most of her free time bossing Devon around. But she does have a heart of gold, and has been in relationships with both Ethan and Devon.
Devon - IS GREAT. he's Cassidy's sidekick, but he's her conscience as well. The crew wanted to make him a Ranger before they realized there was no sixth Ranger this season.

(Sky, Z, Jack, Syd, Bridge. Not pictured - Sam, Doggie, Kat, A-Squad)

SPD takes place in 2025 and may or may not be an alternate universe. This is the police themed season, where the Rangers fight alien criminals. Oh, and there's an invasion, and they don't actually like each other for most of the season! In fact, they aren't even supposed to be the main Rangers! You see, the "real" Rangers vanished, and this is the team that they're left with...Oh, and for some reason (that is explained, mostly) they all have super powers.

Jack - The Red Ranger. A former thief with a heart of gold. He ends up quitting the team because he decides he can do more good helping the homeless then by fighting monsters.
Sky - Sky's dad was a Red Ranger (which one is up for debate.) He is a sexist jerk at the start of the season (saying that Syd doesn't deserve to lead the team because she's a girl.) Eventually he learns not to be a jerk! Mostly. He gets rewarded for saying that he would follow Syd by getting to be the Red Ranger after Jack quits. Jack and Sky are SUPER SLASHY.
Z - Also a former thief with an even BIGGER heart of gold. Seriously, Z is great. (She's a yellow Ranger, of course she's great.) Her power involves splitting into multiple versions of herself. Sadly, there is a SEVERE lack of porn showcasing this power.
Bridge - The only Jewish Ranger! Bridge's power is some weird telepathy/empathy/sensing thing. He really likes buttery toast, and is a cloudcuckoolander to the extreme. He and Z are super adorable. (Some people ship him with Sky. Possibly because they're roommates or something.)
Syd - SYD IS THE BEST. She is a girly girl to the extreme, but she's also incredibly good at being a Ranger, and really generous.
Sam - is from the future and never leaves the suit. Before that he was some orphan kid that Z befriended. Has no plot.
Doggie Kruger - the SPD commander. He's a... dog alien. And in charge of SPD. He's supposedly the last of his species, but then his wife shows up out of nowhere.
Kat Manx - The tech. She's a cat alien, who should have gotten together with Doggie. She's briefly a Ranger, for like an episode. She deserved to be one forever.
A-Squad - the original team of Rangers. Mostly notable for having the first (and so far only!) female Red Ranger in Power Rangers history. Of course, they're also brainwashed and crazy.

(Chip, Maddie, Nick, Vida, Xander. Not pictured - Daggeron, Udonna, Leanbow, Toby, Leelee, Phineas, Clare.)

This season is... Ninjas meets Harry Potter. Five teens end up discovering a magical village alternate reality in the forest, where it turns out they're the last hope or something. This season is WEIRD. Oh, and it turns out the Red Ranger is the long lost kid of the white Ranger and one of the villains, who is brainwashed and crazy. As mentioned, this season is weird. It's also GREAT.

This season has a canon AU called Dark Wish which is freaking awesome. Oh, and the Rangers ARE their Zords. Try not to think about what that means when they combine.

Nick - The Red Ranger. Most of the season is about him. YMMV on whether or not this is a good thing. He's Udonna and Leanbow's son, and briefly goes brainwashed and crazy. Sadly, that doesn't last very long.
Xander - Green Ranger. He's Australian and a bit of a jerkass, but he's also having a poly relationship with Vida and Chip, so he's forgiven.
Maddie - Maddie is our second female blue ranger, and she's shy with self-esteem issues. She's also in the middle of a love triangle between Daggeron and Nick. She also gets to make awesome speeches.
Vida - Maddie's sister! Vida is a DJ and briefly becomes a vampire (non-sparkle variety.) Vida is annoyed by being pink at first, but grows to embrace it. Her hair will also let you know which Ranger is going to be focused on that episode.
Chip - Chip is AMAZING. He's a geek and wants to be a knight. He just loves being a superhero and the fact that their costumes have capes. He's full of love and win and joy.
Udonna - the White Ranger, and Nick's mother. She loses her powers at the beginning of the season, and has assumed for years that her husband and son are dead. Obviously, not.
Leanbow - Was evil and brainwashed for the first half of the season as Koragg. His redemption arc is pretty great.
Daggeron - a frog that Maddie kissed that turned out to secretly be a Mystic Knight Sixth Ranger.
Toby - The Rangers' boss at a record shop. Is awesome.
Leelee - The daughter of the vampire queen. Starts off as a mean girl, before getting to kick a lot of ass.
Phineas - everyone's favorite troblin (troll/goblin.) He and Leelee are adorable.
Clare - Udonna's niece/apprentice. She's also the new Gatekeeper which makes her pretty powerful.

There are approximately 10,000 villains, but most of them don't matter.

(Tyzonn, Dax, Mack, Ronny, Rose, Will. Not pictured - Andrew, Spenser, ALL THE VILLAINS.)

Overdrive is not my favorite season. Basically, rich archaeologist Andrew Hartford finds out that all the villains are trying to find the jewels of the Corona Aurora, so he creates his own Power Ranger team. Oh, and his son is a robot. That's totally the best part of the season.

This season also features the 15th anniversary special, Once a Ranger, which brought back Rangers from previous seasons (Adam, Tori, Kira, Bridge and Xander) and gave me an excuse to ship Adam/Kira.)

Mack - is a robot. It's the BEST PART OF THE SEASON. His arc is fantastic, and eventually he becomes a real boy.
Will - Was covert ops, and eventually learns to be a team player.
Ronny - is a racecar driver. Learns nothing. (No, really, everyone else learns a lesson. She does not.)
Rose - a second genius pink Ranger! She's pretty great, and gets possessed by a pirate at one point.
Dax - Can't act. Is a stunt man, who wants to be an actor.
Tyzonn - An alien who was briefly evil and brainwashed. Are you sensing a theme?
Andrew - Think the love child of Batman and Indiana Jones.
Spenser - Andrew's boyfriend butler. Master of disguises, and totally secretly Alfred Pennyworth. They should really go to a butler convention.
All the villains - There are FOUR separate villain teams this season. None of them get any development.

(Dom, Theo, Lily, RJ, Casey. Not pictured - Fran, Jarrod, Camille, the other masters)

I described this season to a friend as "so the Rangers went to a secret ninja school, and then a box containing the ultimate evil got opened, so they had to go work for a stoner werewolf at a pizza place. Oh, and there's a surfing penguin zord." That is... still probably the best description of the season.

Casey - The rookie red ranger. He has a tiger spirit, and is a failbot for the beginning of the season. But he's also the only one to believe in Jarrod. Casey is adorable and eventually learns to believe in himself.
Theo - the shortest Ranger. He's tiny and sarcastic and is good at everything, except for dealing with people. Has a crush on Lily for the whole season. He's also really smug.
Lily - AGAIN, THE ONLY GIRL. But she's pretty great and at one point when Theo and Casey are fighting over her, she calls them on their nonsense and informs them that she is not an object, she is a person. I love her a lot.
RJ - RJ is the first purple ranger. He's also the best mentor in Power Rangers history. He's also a stoner werewolf who runs a pizza place. If that hasn't convinced you to like him, I don't know what to say.
Dom - Dom is the fifth Ranger. He has the rhino spirit and is a "prankster." I use the term loosely.
Fran - Fran basically does all the work at Jungle Karma Pizza (yes, really) while the Rangers are off doing their thing. She loves two things at the beginning of the season - pizza and books. Not surprisingly, Fran is well-loved in fandom. She canonically gets with Dom, but RJ/Fran!
Jarrod/Dai Shi - Jarrod was originally supposed to be in the group that protected the box of evil, before he proved to be a jackass and opened the box, getting possessed by the evil spirit Dai Shi. Look, the villains make very little sense. Jarrod eventually turns good, because he realizes he loves Camille, and that Casey loves him as well.
Camille - Dai Shi's sidekick. She just wants him to love her. She gets to save the day and be super competent. Oh, and she's got this fly that she swallowed who comments on Zord fights. It's complicated.
The other masters - There are a LOT of masters who help out. Including the one who gives them a surfing penguin zord. I still have no idea what that has to do with a jungle, but I don't care.

(Ziggy, Flynn, Scott, Summer, Dillon. Not pictured - Dr K, Gem, Gemma, and Tenaya.)

The last Disney season, and one of the best! This either takes place in the future or is an AU. (We don't know. The original producer got fired. It's confusing.) But really, I don't care, because this season is AMAZING. So, it starts off with the apocalypse. Corinth is the last city on earth, because a sentient computer virus (created by Dr K) has basically destroyed everything. Of course, there are still some Rangers to protect the last city and try to save the world, but this season is both dark and hilarious.

Seriously, they mock the show a lot Also, this season makes WAY more sense if you think of the main romance in terms of X-Men comics.

Scott - the Red Ranger. His dad is the military guy in charge of Corinth. His older brother died in the attack, and Scott just wants his dad to love him. Oh, and he's a pilot. And is secretly Cyclops.
Summer - a poor little rich girl, who eventually realized that there's more to life then being spoiled. (The end of the world and having your butler sacrifice himself to save you will do that.)
Flynn - He just wants to be a hero! Seriously, he loves comic books, and prior to the apocalypse, he just tried to do help people by joining the police, fire department, and peace corps. (He kept getting kicked out, because he HELPED people and didn't follow orders.) He's more than just a simple mechanic. Oh, and he's Scottish.
Dillon - is Wolverine. He and Scott spend an episode handcuffed together. He has amnesia, and it turns out that Tenaya is secretly his sister, because the season was borrowing from Space. Oh, and he's also infected with the computer virus.
Ziggy - a former mob guy turned faily Ranger. He's not very good at either of these, but he and Dillon are pretty much the fandom's OTP. He's adorable.
Dr K - the teenage girl who accidentally ended the world. It wasn't really her fault! She just wanted to go outside, but the secret government organization that raised her wouldn't let her. She also creates the Ranger powers, and won't use the Rangers real names, just referring to them as series operator [color]
Gem and Gemma - The gold and silver rangers. They're twins, and vaguely insane. They're K's best friends, and they like to blow stuff up.
Tenaya - see Astronema, add robot parts.

(Mia, Mike, Jayden, Kevin, Emily. Not pictured - Antonio, Deker, Dayu, Ji, Bulk, Spike, SWORD HAT.)

So, Saban bought Power Rangers back! And then the fandom rejoiced! It is very much in the old school style, and post RPM, that is weird. But also great. This season is currently airing, and since it's sticking pretty closely to the sentai that it's adapted from, many people are guessing at plot twists, but I will refrain from discussing Shinkenger and those rumors.

Jayden - The Red Ranger! He is almost as emo as Andros, but in a different way. He is a Very Serious leader type, and feels the need to take on extra responsibility for himself, since the weight of the world is on his shoulders. He's also the object of a love triangle - both Antonio and Deker are pretty much in love with him.
Mike - the vaguely irresponsible super hot joker. He loves videogames and Emily.
Kevin - super serious swimmer samurai. He has a zord that turns into a SWORD HAT. Also, he and Mia are adorable, when he's not totally flirting (badly) with Jayden or Antonio.
Emily - The eternal optimist yellow Ranger! Her older sister was supposed to be the yellow ranger, but she got sick, so Emily took her place. Emily also does wacky arms.
Mia - another girly girl pink, who cooks about as well as Sailor Venus does. She's very romantic, and just wants her romantic dream. That won't stop her from kicking your ass, though.
Antonio - the sixth Ranger! Unlike the others, he wasn't born into this, but basically is self-taught. He and Jayden were BFFs when they were tiny children, and now they are pretty much in love. Ji does not approve of him. He's ADORABLE.
Deker - played by the same actor who played Cole in Wild Force. Since Wild Force, he a) got super hot and b) got some acting lessons. He's obsessed with Jayden, and his dialogue actually includes the line "taste the slash." I am not making this up.
Dayu - one of the villains! She has some sort of backstory that involves Deker, but we don't have all the details yet.
Ji - The mentor. He's Jayden's father figure, and while RJ was the best mentor in PR, Ji is one of the worst. He clearly favors Jayden over the others, and someone should really call him out on that.
Bulk - Yes, that Bulk. Just as Tommy came back for season 12, Bulk came back for season 18. He's there to train his nephew Spike to be a samurai.
Spike - Skull's son. (Yes, that Skull.) He's in training to be a samurai, and has a crush on the Pink Ranger. He's also beginning to figure out who the Rangers are.
SWORD HAT - The best zord ever. It's a sword hat. IT IS GREAT.

Samurai is on summer hiatus right now, but supposedly it will be back in the fall.
