They Only Seem to Surrender by Sharksdontsleep (Explicit)
Hi everyone, I'm
smirnoffmule, and I'm going to be reccing fics from George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series this month. The fandom overview is on its way, but meanwhile I'm going to start with one of my favourite stories that was written in response to the recent release of A Dance with Dragons.
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Pairing: Theon Greyjoy/Jeyne Poole
Length: 4053 words
Author: Sharksdontsleep
Author Website: Sharksdontsleep on AO3
Why this must be read:
I didn’t go into A Dance with Dragons expecting to find Theon Greyjoy a sympathetic character, but I came out having loved his arc and his emotional journey, and this fic really offers some beautiful catharsis in the wake of that. Theon and Jeyne are two broken people trying to put each other back together again. Jeyne finds simple strength in taking what she wants, and Theon finds his in doing what he’s told for all the right reasons. Sharksdontsleep’s language is sparse and unsentimental, but the moments it captures are beautiful, and the characters really well drawn. I particularly enjoyed Asha’s scene, her character making a contrast, and an interesting connection, with Jeyne. The fic closes with the characters still in peril, their futures uncertain, but still finding space for some warmth and hope.
Extract:
Jeyne sleeps in his room - in his old room, which is strange enough - in the place where he once bunked with Robb and Jon and Bran when the weather turned cold.
There’s no one to tease him about it, to chide him for taking another man’s wife, even a dead man’s, but then they sleep as chaste as children. Asha is still being held prisoner, still shackled, though she’s permitted about the castle with an armed guard, as if that will stop her, as if her husband will ransom her.
No one’s quite sure what to do with Theon; the Iron Islands have a new king in the Crow’s Eye, and no one thinks Theon will try to depose him, least of all Theon.

Given the insane twisting plot and high body count, it would suck to be spoiled, even if it's spoiled with really good fic.

Hee, you're making me slightly jealous actually, I kind of wish I hadn't read them sometimes, so I could experience them all over again. :D
