We're going to look at one of the rare pairings of the fandom now - Ray/Jason. I only know of a few fics with this pairing, but they're gems (as tends to happen with rare pairs, in GK fandom at least). Just A You And A Me, and its sequel, Save a Humvee, Ride a Marine are my favourite.
This is one of those friendship-turns-to-more fics - Jason's wife has left him, and he crashes at Ray's for a while. Though it's a fanfic cliche (and particularly so for this fandom, given its material), this fic manages to make it a fresh new look at how two guys fresh back from war could bond in a different way. Both the character voices are great and feel like they're straight out of the mini. It has a gorgeous slow build of tension/realisation between Ray and Jason - and the payout is incredibly hot - descriptive and absolutely incendiary.
Lilley is one of those he talks to most, which is kinda unexpected because in Iraq, they hadn't been especially close, but whatever. Ray gets the feeling that things aren't brilliant over at his place, and after a few emails, Lilley admits that him and his wife have been arguing a lot. Apparently her decision to join the Marines was a last-ditch attempt at saving their marriage, which had been strained for a while. Ray knows it's not the first relationship to get fucked by war and it definitely won't be the last, but still.... he hurts for his friend.
A couple of weeks into January, Lilley sends him an email saying that he might be needing a place to stay soon. Ray doesn't hesitate, and two days later, he's buying extra blankets and stocking up on beer and junk food. He meets Lilley at the airport, grinning like an idiot and hugging him fiercely before slapping his back. He feels almost high, pure rush of happiness at seeing his brother again, and sees it mirrored in Lilley's smile. They have to wait for Lilley's bag at the stupid carousel, talking shit about the others, and a few of the people standing near them give them looks, but Ray can't bring himself to care because this, right here, was what he'd been missing. This was what he hadn't been able to get with his civvie friends.
They spend the evening watching crappy TV, eating more pizza than is healthy, and drinking enough beer to incapacitate a fucking platoon. It's the best night Ray's had since he got back, and when he finally crashes on his bed, only just managing to shuck his jeans, he doesn't dream of explosions and little kids with the legs blown off for the first time in what feels like forever.
