Why this must be read: It’s an historical AU, with a twist--and what a twist it is. TS is such a natural fandom for AUs of all kinds. You can drop the guys into pretty much any time, any place and in any situation, even ones that are a bit… out there. After all, canon has spirit animals, ghosts, blue dream visions—it’s little wonder authors can push the envelope with confidence; readers simply ask for a bigger envelope!

Such is Bluewolf’s tale. It starts before canon, by about 3000 years. Naomi and Blair (who start life as Noma and Balar) are part of a village, where a Watchman (in this case a woman) has come to visit and be welcomed into the tribe. She immediately gloms onto Balar, instinctively knowing he’s a Companion. Balar interprets her actions as an assault and pushes her away; as she falls, her head hits a rock and she dies. The superstitions of the time run rampant, so of course this is an evil omen. As punishment, the village elder puts an enchantment on Balar: he will age very slowly but never die until he is accepted by a Watchman. Noma is included in the enchantment and they are both banished.

Thus begins an epic search; who knew sentinels were so rare? On the way, Bluewolf shares how the world changes and how it remains the same over the years. She’s done her homework and the details provide a lot of enjoyment. This Blair and Naomi are still recognizable, but their experiences put a different spin on things when they finally dovetail into the TS canon universe.

Bluewolf has been writing steadily in TS for more than a decade and is one of our most prolific authors. “To Serve a Sentinel” is one of her more recent offerings. Enjoy.
