Why this must be read:
This is a very well written exploration of some very particular kinks. The author manages to explore how Steve and Danny gradually discovered their mutual interest in painplay, bloodplay, knifeplay, and other aspects of S/M without making it feel like the fic is about the kinks. This fic is very much about the relationship between our leads and what the kinks reveal about the relationship and the characters. Too often kink fic changes the character to fit the kink, but here the characters stay very realistically in character as they deal with what this new facet to their relationship says about them.
This fic opened my eyes to how good kink writing could be. It transcends all expectations and I can't recommend it enough.
An Excerpt:
It’s only after he comes down that Danny sees the gauze on Steve’s arm is blotched with red. He did that, he made Steve bleed and what’s more: He made Steve scream, he made him come just from what? Digging his fingers into raw flesh and making it hurt more? He didn’t cut Steve, but all the rest… he did that. He looks at his hand and he’s got bloodstains on his palm, too. Danny makes himself a little sick when he leans in for a closer look, reveling in it just a little bit.
Maybe they’re taking this stuff too far, he thinks when he jerks his head back and closes his hand into a loose fist, hiding the rusty smudges on his palm. Then he looks at Steve, who’s looking back at him, fingers idly running across a bruise Danny’s fingers left on his side. Steve smiles at him, a little loopy and he almost looks stoned. Danny lies beside him on the floor when Steve tugs at his arm to urge him down and thinks that maybe they’re doing okay after all. Maybe.
He still keeps his bloodstained fingers curled over his rust-colored palm. Just in case.
