The Threat of Other Chicks by Ethan Nelson (NC-17)

Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Skinner
Author on LJ: Not that I know
Author Website: Seriously Bent (Doesn't include the X-Files stories, but they're at the Basement)
Why this must be read:

I've been trying not to pick authors that already appear in the X-Files Memories, so Torch, Sleeps With Coyotes and Xanthe haven't had a look in, but I was delighted to realise no one had recced anything by this author yet.

Mulder and Skinner are lovers. In an unexpected plot development Mulder gets hit on the head. Mulder wakes up with amnesia. Skinner has to wrestle with his conscience, and decide whether to take this new Mulder as his lover. Sounds like a recipe for angst? Not in an Ethan Nelson story.

It's all down to Ethan Nelson that on my first visit to America I nearly missed the place I was supposed to be staying, since I was completely distracted by seeing my first ever Denny's opposite!
Ethan (aka Mallory Klohn) was a legend in her X-Files lifetime, her stories a triumphant combination of hot sex and hilarious dialogue. She was also adept at sliding a little insight of the characters into the most bizarre situations. This is one of her more restrained stories, although you might not realise that from the surreal humour of the opening scene. But if you enjoy it and you've never read her other stuff, you have the delights of the Denny's cycle to look forward to.
Just a couple of paragraphs to whet your appetite:

Funny how he'd started thinking of Mulder as two different men. Therein was probably the reason why he was so reluctant to fall prey to Mulder now that he didn't remember anything much beyond basic principles of mathematics and the names of many and varied porn stars and their specialties. Intellectually, Walter knew this was not a betrayal. Mulder himself would remember everything that had taken place, and God knew the man would have no objections unless the sex wasn't good enough.

When the hot water began to run out, the AD realized he was hiding in his shower stall. Shameful, really. Shameful, and embarrassing. Other ex-Marines didn't hole up in their bathrooms to avoid eager amnesiac lovers. He got out with a sigh, shaved, and wrapped himself in his robe. In his final rodent-like moment, he pressed his ear against the door. Nothing, not even the faint strains of his lover singing "Have You Ever Really Loved A G-Man."
