If I Should Fall From Grace With God, by Luka
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Doyle/OMC, Bodie/Doyle?
Length: 25,700 words

Why this must be read:
There's a number of stories which deal with the aftermath to rape in the Pros fandom. The majority of them show the lads looking after each other: one protecting the other from the world and helping them deal with the shock and horror of it.
This is not such a story. Instead, the rock-steady relationship between partners has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Initially, Doyle will not even countenance speaking to Bodie, who has obviously failed him badly. So badly that Doyle has left CI5...
A friend in need turns out to be Kate Ross, who steers him into a course of study he thrives on and involves him in her research work. Kate Ross's background - whether portrayed as psychology or psychiatry - is often handy for authors. In this story, though, the character of Kate herself comes through strongly in addition, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of her, and Lucy, and Marcus.
Doyle's new life outside CI5 involves helping Kate Ross with offender profiling, an expertise that becomes vital when CI5 are faced with a series of sex attacks with no apparent motive. He is reluctantly willing to help CI5, but there's one condition. No Bodie.
Murphy stared at him for a moment, before shrugging and saying: "I follow most of this, but there are a couple of points you or Kate will need to talk through with us."
"What d'you need clarifying?"
"I'd rather Bodie heard them as well."
"Fix a time with Kate, then."
"Ray, why won't you talk to him?"
Doyle exploded: "Jesus, Murph, are you fucking thick or something? I've made it perfectly clear that I don't want anything to do with him!"
"But why?"
"That's none of your fucking business!"
"It's my business when I have to put up with you being obnoxious and him mooching around like a bear with a sore head because you won't let him apologise."
"It's too fucking late for that."
"Limited vocabulary you've got.... Yeah, I know, fuck off!"
In spite of himself, Doyle smiled. "Look Murph, I've no gripe with you, but I wish you'd let the matter drop. Bodie said a lot of things that can never be unsaid. CI5's way behind me and I just want to get on with what I'm doing now."
Naturally, things don't work out like that. The case continues, and comes far too close to home. We find out exactly what Bodie said to shatter things (ohhh, Bodie, no!) and we see Bodie's efforts to put things right. This is a story that sounds as though it should centre on Doyle - he is the one who was raped, and he is the character we follow - but Luka shows us both men.
Doyle picked up the mug of tea and headed into the back room. "I've got some work to do. You can come and sit in here if you're so keen to continue this scintillating conversation."
"Ray, you're not making this very easy."
"Why should I?"
"Because I'm doing my best here."
Doyle ignored the comment and sat cross-legged on the floor, pulling the partially sanded door towards him.
"What are you doing?"
"Sanding this down so I can stain it and maybe fit some stained glass in it. Found it in a skip."
"Shall I start at the other end?"
"If you like. But you'll make a mess of that fancy suit."
Bodie shrugged and reached for a square of sandpaper.
When I got to the next line in that scene, I knew there was still hope.
