Every Purpose Under Heaven by Halotolerant (Teen & Up Audiences)

Fandom: LEWIS
Pairing: Robbie Lewis/James Hathaway
Length: 3k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant

Why this must be read:
Such a complicated thing, the relationship between Inspector and Sergeant. Probably seeing more of each other than the average person did a spouse, and yet within that the range for intimacy was... wide.

This deceptively gentle story begins with Hathaway helping Lewis clear out his mother-in-law's house. It calls back to Morse, and back to Lewis's wife Val, and made me feel the ordinariness of grief. I felt a strange pleasure of shock and sadness coming upon lines like: A TV Times lay open on a coffee table, pen put down in the act of circling programmes for the coming week. The story moves from that universality into a beautifully specific coming together of Lewis and Hathaway that could only be written about them.

I'm explaining it all wrong. Please go read.

I've been so looking forward to seeing what you rec, and this first story is an excellent choice - I'd list it in one of my top five in the fandom. It's one I return to over and over - the gorgeous writing and vivid descriptions, as you say, and also the subtle emotions and dialogue, the caring between them expressed in little ways such as tea or teasing each other over microwavable meals - or a seminar James decides he doesn't need to get back for. Wonderful first rec!

Fantastic first rec. So many great lines in this one, including But happiness, the ability to give and receive happiness, didn’t that carry its own morality? Didn’t that make sense of the unlikely, and give dignity to something as ridiculous as two grown men whispering and tentative, blushing in the darkness? So perfectly them.

Oo, that was gorgeous, filled with anxiety and hesitation and what might even be called love (but not in the commonly known meaning of the word). Fabulous.

Heee! I gladly accept all blame, though surely some must be due to the mischievous Messrs. Fox and Whately. :D
