Why this must be read: After the reboot, there was a renewed sense of Pike love in some corners of the AOS community. This story exemplifies that with much badassery from both Chapel and Pike (hand-to-hand combat class with Pike as instructor!!). There is also hot sex and Gaila, Uhura, and Chapel friendship/bantering.
"Now," he instructs calmly, "when you're in a smaller space, movement is going to be severely restricted, so you have to make every move count. So when someone attacks you, like I'm going to attack Cadet Chapel here, I want you to hit hard and hit fast. Don't give them a chance to catch their breath, just surprise them and get them off-balance, and don't stop until they're on the ground and unconscious." He looks over at the sea of serious faces in front of him, and Christine feels a shiver run down her spine at the experience in his voice. She hopes to Christ she'll never have to use any of this training in real situations; just learning about it is scary enough.
When he gives the word, he grabs her around the waist and starts to pull her forward, so she shoves her elbow into his gut and slams her foot on top of his, relishing his grunt of pain as he backs off enough for her to turn around and throw a hard right-hand punch against his jaw, knocking him on his ass. For a moment, she's stunned that she actually did it, that she actually got in a proper punch and knocked him flat, and then it hits her that she's struck a superior officer, and sure he said to do it, but maybe he hadn't meant to actually beat him, maybe he'd just meant to mime all the punches just to show the class, and fuck, what has she done and how far away is the court-martial?
