Why this must be read:
Author's Summary: When Merlin's magic is discovered, he's sentenced to burn at the stake. He is saved but things are far from over.
This fic has so many elements that I adore. There's angsty magic reveals, heroic rescues, caring relationships, unsuspected twists, an engaging and fast-paced plot, a coming-of-age story, vivid OCs, and action sequences that will leave you panting. The story is rich with details of life in a Druid camp and details of love in the budding relationships between Merlin and Lance, Florridel and Morgana, and Gwen and Arthur. It's a story that will make you glad you killed hours by reading it.
Because this wasn't right. Merlin should not die.
She was quickly and horribly coming to realise that she still had no idea how to even use her magic, let alone control it. She tried to focus all her attention upon the candle and thought of the flames flickering from the wick, then rising higher and higher. Morgana gritted her teeth, willing it to just exist.
But nothing seemed to work. She could hear the drone of Uther's voice, condemning Merlin to death and with each dragging second her heart seemed to beat even faster and even harder in her chest.
Then she thought she saw it. A faint flickering hint of yellow appeared at the tip of the wick and then vanished.
Morgana's breath stilled as she wondered for a moment if it was perhaps a trick of the light.
But no, it had been magic. It must have been. It just had to have been magic.
Concentrating on where the little flame had been, Morgana tried to focus her mind and her thoughts again.
Then, suddenly, screams and shouts of surprise from down in the courtyard drew her attention. Morgana looked out of the window to see a figure on horseback and bearing a sword charging through the startled crowd. She pressed her face against the glass but had no hope of recognising his face. Whoever it was, he had wrapped a piece of cloth around his head and then across his mouth, disguising himself.
