Why this must be read:
Mate!fic! More specifically, mated-from-birth fic, and it is adorable and angsty and all sorts of great things.
It's quite probable that Derek and Stiles have seen each other at some point before the fire—Beacon Hills is not that big a town, really, and even if we don't know the exact age difference between the two, they must've crossed paths at school—and this fic builds a careful, painful relationship between the two literally since Stiles was in the womb.
Derek, being Derek, tries to stay away; Stiles, being Stiles, gets used to rejection. Basically, it's an endearing and heartbreaking fic exploring the idea of Derek always having known that Stiles was the one for him.

Derek hadn't wanted Kate but Kate had wanted Derek, and that was good enough, an outlet for frustration bursting at the seams. He'd been so grateful, he spilled out everything to her. She made him feel like his skin was on fire.
Apt, that.
That's all gone now; can't burn ashes. There's nothing left of Derek but anger and this scrabbling will to survive, like something too dumb to realize it's dead already. Stiles is right to be afraid of him. Derek makes a fairly compelling cautionary tale.
He reaches the Hale house winded, although he didn't even break a sweat on the way. Attempts to steady himself on a half-burned-through support column, which snaps and cracks under his weight. Derek lets himself fall, sprawling on the floor.
He pushes up, and finds himself face-to-face with a dandelion sprouting amidst the charred wood.
Oh, look, Derek thinks bleakly. It's a metaphor.
