Goodnight Moon by CapriciousPancake (PG)
I'm sad to say I don't have many recs involving the Alpha kids, but I did manage to find one or two I really liked that didn't spoil too much for someone like me who's still catching up. *embarrassed cough*
Fandom: HOMESTUCK
Pairing: Dirk/Alpha!Dave
Length: 3,331 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: AO3 | Tumblr
Why this must be read: I'm not yet up to the Alpha kids storyline, but the summary and pairing twerked my curiosity (because I'm all about Stridercest and Lalondecest and all combinations of the two - I have no shame about this). What I found here was heartbreaking sadstuck and a good introduction to Dirk's character and background for someone like me who knew only bits and pieces. I imagine for more up-to-date fans (RE: everyone but me, xD ), it's a nice filler for his background story if it's not touched too much upon in the comic. Fair warning, it'll make you cry, or at least tear up considerably. All the feelz right here. T.T
Summary:
Dirk Strider is a very lonely boy who gradually falls in love with a very dead man.
Excerpt:
You go through the movies and see educational ones, like the ones you have that taught you to read and write. Funny ones, long ones, short ones, ones with talking animals and ones that are entirely animated. And two, at the very bottom, with a blank cases. The first has a note with a scribbled Happy Birthday, and the second has one that said Stories.
You blow dust off of the last one and slide it into your computer. It doesn’t start with a menu like your other movies, just plays automatically, opening to a room that you recognize. It’s yours, but with a different furniture layout and not as much technology. It kind of scares you because you’re supposed to be alone and the idea that someone could have been in your sanctuary is frightening.
The camera is focused on a chair in the middle of the room, with a light source somewhere behind it. Ten seconds pass before you hear movement and a very quiet murmur of a voice and you forget how to breathe.
He turns the corner, sits in the chair, stares right at the camera, right into your eyes. Blond hair and sunglasses and he’s tall and lanky like you. You have a picture of him and you’ve never seen him in person before but somehow he means something really important to you. He clears his throat and you jump, startled, because no one on your school movies did that and it’s weird hearing the sound come from someone else.
“Hello, Dirk,” he says, and it’s the first time you’ve heard anyone who wasn’t you speak your name out loud. He puts more emphasis on the ir sound than you do in your head. Your heart is beating so fast and you’re terrified because that’s not supposed to happen, what if you die? “My name is Dave.” The man swallows. “I’m your brother.”
You eject the disc and turn off the screen of your computer, huddle under the sheets on your (big, so big, too big) bed and shiver.
Goodnight Moon
This fic inspired Just Say The Magic Wordby chromyrose, which is basically the same story but focuses on Roxy instead (though it doesn't have her falling in love with alpha!Rose outside of a mother-daughter thing). Pretty similar story, so if you enjoy this one, then Just Say The Magic Word is well worth a read (especially if you like Roxy)!
