Why this must be read:
Because he is a relatively minor character, I did not mention Terazuma Hajime in the fandom overview. He gets no mention at all in the anime and just a brief side story in the manga.
If you are not familiar with Terazuma, this shinigami was a police detective when alive. He is partnered with a lovely young woman named Wakaba. Terazuma’s shikigami – a giant red and black lion called KokuShunGai, - was forced upon him by its former master, and they have fused into one body. Whenever Terazuma is touched by a member of the opposite sex (or, interestingly enough, by Hisoka *g*) he transforms into KokuShunGai. He remains partnered with Wakaba because she is the only person who can transform him back.
This short gen fic deftly explores the Terazuma + KokuShunGai backstory, how they came to be together, how Terazuma handles the betrayal and the violation and grudgingly comes to accept his lot. It’s a great little vignette for a fascinating character that doesn’t get enough play in the fandom.
[Terazuma] fell back a step, but his teacher had always been faster, and the man had caught his wrists and was pulling him close before his lips had time to shape a protest.
He remembers KokuShunGei's name being called, and a whispered plea for forgiveness before the pain struck and lashed him to his knees, tearing a scream from his his throat. He remembers the way his cry echoed. He remembers red, and black, and such fury and pain, not his own, too strong, too strange to be his own as the last remnants of his life before were immolated in the deafening volume of a betrayed shikigami's roar.
