Why this must be read:

I don’t tend to read many crossovers (though I’ve written a few), because they need to involve fandoms I have at least a passing familiarity with, but this one came at just the right time for me. I was just getting into the Star Trek Reboot fandom last summer when this fic fell into my lap, and, because it involved my primary fandom, it made the Trek ‘verse that much more approachable. The story is a fusion of White Collar into the Star Trek Reboot ‘verse, and while the characters of the Reboot are referred to often, they don’t really play a part. Hope that counts for Crack Van Collision?

Anyway, onto the rec: remember in the movie where all the cadets had to be sent to defend Vulcan because the primary fleet was engaged in the Laurentian System? In this story, there was a massive battle taking place over there, where the Federation was victorious, due in part to the heroics of one Captain Peter Burke. However, in the process of saving several other ships, Burke’s own ship was massively damaged and he’s stuck teaching at the Academy while it’s in for repairs. That’s the setup.

On his first day, Burke encounters a young, brilliant, half-human, half-Vulcan cadet named Neal Caffrey. The moment they meet, they are unwittingly bonded (there goes that wonderful trope yet again), and the story deals with the fallout of that accident.

This story is simultaneously romantic, thoughtful and, of course, smoking hot, but it also explores issues of consent and power dynamics in a Peter/Neal teacher/student relationship that will ring true for 'shippers from the WC fandom where the same power differential (Neal is Peter's criminal informant, and still technically a prisoner) is often explored just as thoughtfully by fans. Because of their bond, Peter and Neal are wildly attracted to each other, and can also "feel" each other's sexual needs, but Peter is an honorable man, and will not touch Neal while he is his student. This leads to a LOT of really creatively written wank scenes :) So this is a perfect rec for May, eh? (See: [livejournal.com profile] mmom)

The story also explores aspects of Vulcan culture via a sudden influx of Vulcan OCs at the Academy who, taking Commander Spock’s heroism into consideration, now feel they ought to contribute to the defense of what they hold important: the Federation and its mission. Neal, having been raised on Earth by his human mother, is a fascination to his fellow Vulcans and acts as a sort of bridge to help assimilate those students into the Academy while learning more and more about his heritage and abilities from them.

As with any fusion fic, all of the familiar characters from the White Collar universe are present and accounted for – my favorite being Reese Hughes as one kickass admiral. I seriously think he’d give Chris Pike a run for coolest boss ever.

This story is rich, imaginative, and dense with detail that will make any Trek fan happy (there is even a pon farr scene – naturally!). I hope you will check it out.
