Why this must be read:This is a post Operation Susie story. It picks up right after the episode. I like that they feel betrayed, I certainly did, and the lads act on this feeling. They discover the wilds of Scotland and their feelings for each other.




"Doyle, this is Cowley's country, even all the way up here. If we stay, he'll find us."

"There's no trail..."

"That doesn't matter to him!"

"No!" Doyle jumped to his feet, heedless of the tea that sloshed over the side of his mug, that ran down the fingers of his hand. He turned away from Bodie, then abruptly back. "We were careful. Maybe we could have found us, but..."

"We're not the only agents at CI5!"

"No. But we were the best, Bodie."

The words slid, thick as blood, into the air between them. We were the best.

Bodie closed his eyes on them briefly, wanting them gone, wanting them never said, wanting them to be untrue. But they weren't, and so he opened his eyes, faced the day. Faced Doyle. "And that's why he needs us gone now."

Another of my favourite stories. When it was first posted to the circuit archive it was missing a paragraph - might have been more than that, I can't remember now - which made the story a bit disjointed in the middle. When it was amended, and reposted with the paragraph in place, it was a good excuse to go read it again. Not that you need an excuse to re-read byslantedlight's work.
