Awakenings by Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (NC-17)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Author: Lobelia Sackville-Baggins
Author website: House of Hobbits
Pairing: Sam/Frodo, Merry/Pippin
Rating: NC-17
Why this must be read:
Essentially, this story is about Sam and Pippin daydreaming about what it would be like to wake up with Frodo and Merry respectively. There's so much more actually going on; Sam's acknowledgement of the class issues, Pippin's frustration with the very closeness of his relationship with Merry which precludes intimacy. There is real tenderness here and an almost achingly wistful quality. Both of the daydreams begin and end with the same phrases and this gives the vignette a poignant frame. What seems to come out the most strongly is despite the heat and sensual nature of the daydreams, what motives both Sam and Pippin is clearly love but a quiet, constant love.
A lovely, wistful piece of writing.
One of these days, Sam promises himself (and can't decide whether he really means it or not), he's going to wake Frodo with something a little more intimate than a touch on the shoulder. That soft, warm skin burns his hand every time, making him hurt with want, with the temptation to even just let his thumb run over Frodo's arm in a soft caress. One of these days he's going to give himself a little freer rein with that hand, let it stroke over Frodo's shoulder and down his arm and back up to trace the line of Frodo's ear and the curve of his lips. And Frodo may be awake by that time or he may not – probably not, he may be a restless sleeper but he doesn't wake easy – but the issue of how he tastes will still be unresolved, so Sam will brush his hair back out of the way and nibble at whatever part of Frodo's ear happens to be readily accessible.
