Why this must be read: Because it's apocalypse fic, bleak and raw, and because it's Giles, forever losing and fighting to keep going, and it's Buffy, relating to him the way nobody else ever can. The passage of time means that somewhere along the way this pairing changed from something often unbelievable and illicit to a fascinating exploration of an entirely unique relationship, when done right -- and august does it more than right. And on top of the achingly perfect characterization, this is too gorgeously written to describe; read it and read it now. Quotes:
