see, this sounds dreadful - and you can say, oh, perhaps it will convince you to watch pros or S&H whatever, but i think that fanfic is always best in the context of the show. you'd get so much less out of it if you didn't know what was going on - so, i'd always prefer... well, i'd always prefer to read fic for a fandom i'm already interested in, but more than that i'd always prefer my fic to be read by someone who knew the canon.

i don't think i will ever buy a multimedia zine - which means that i will just have to miss out on the potential wonders within...
