Why this must be read:

When I was tapped to be a guest SW reccer, I decided my recommendations should include at least one Big Honkin’ Epic. This is it. If you have a weekend — or a week, or, hell, a month, depending on your reading speed — to spare, you’re in luck. The Warrior’s Heart, which spans the last five years of Obi-Wan’s apprenticeship, consists of thirty-six chapters divided into three sections: “Early Days,” “Trials and Errors,” and “What Was Old Is New Again.” (WriteStuff is at work on a sequel series, “The Long Shadow,” parts of which are available at Master Apprentice.)

The author does a great job fleshing out the protagonists and creating a three-dimensional world for them to inhabit. They each have their own baggage, and they all evolve over the course of the series, sometimes in unexpected ways. The relationships have depth and none of them are simple, whether it’s Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan trying to balance their romantic and sexual needs against the demands of the master/padawan roles, Obi-Wan and Bruck coming to terms with their pasts and others’ reactions to the seeming mismatch of Golden Boy and Black Sheep, or Qui-Gon and Bruck dealing with the tensions that result from sharing a lover.

On top of this, WriteStuff’s take on the Jedi Order, particularly the Council, is well thought out and sometimes surprisingly dark. These Jedi are not afraid to get their hands dirty when necessary, though sometimes they have troubling cleaning up afterward. However, it’s still recognizably the Star Wars universe, which means plenty of swashbuckling action, intrigue, and occasional comic relief. Plus, since it’s slash, we get the part that George Lucas left out: sex. Lots of it. (It encompasses some likely squick-triggers — rape, torture, bloodplay, fisting, and let us not forget, The Number One Thing You Should Never, Ever Do With A Lightsaber. This list is just off the top of my head; there may be others.)

In short, this is a multicourse feast of a story which should appeal to many palates. Enjoy!

Note: I’m linking to the disclaimer page of the author’s Web site. The chapters are accompanied by illustrations, some of which are NOT work-safe or kid-friendly.
