Why this must be read: For Alvarez fans, this is a short but incisive look at the contradictions and complexities that made Miguel such a compelling, tragic figure. The author really captures Miguel's sadness and yearning to belong, that mix of machismo and boyishness, cynicism and sensitivity that you could always see in his eyes and body language. And the writing is beautiful.

One writer I dearly wish had written more Oz fic.

Yeah - we could definitely have used more fics of this quality. Though I have to say, from my admittedly limited perusal, Oz has a very high level of quality in its fics compared to other fandoms. The variety might not be great; there's a plethora of B/K, which is fine with me, but not too much Said fic out there, for instance.

And, of course, there are poor Oz fics, as well. But when I first started reading Oz, I was blown away by the high quality.
