Why this must be read: If it wasn't me, someone else was going to recc this story, so I beat everybody to it. Plus, it's creepy as hell, and it's Halloween. Perfect.
As far as WHY in a fandom sense, I don't know a person who doesn't love these stories. They were universally hailed as brilliant when they hit the lists.
As for why I *personally* love them, I have a major love on for clever premises. This one of just that, and typical to BTVS/A:TS specifically: based around an episode with a tiny change that alters the entire verse.

I just sat there stunned after I first read these and I've run across too many people who haven't read them.
