Ghosts and Sharks and Faith Will Carry by Scrunchy (PG)

Hi, [livejournal.com profile] laylee here, and I'll be your Sports Night driver for this month.

I've been wandering around the Sports Night fandom for about four years now, as both a reader and a writer. I have to admit that I'm a die-hard Dan/Casey kinda gal, but what I appreciate most about this fandom is the sheer quality of the fic that has been produced in it. Therefore my aim this time around to bring you a nice selection of fic from across the fandom, be it het, slash and anything in between.

So, on with the show.

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dan/Casey (friendship)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy

Why this must be read:

One day Dan goes away on assignment and doesn't come back. Instead, he spends the next few months roaming around America, having adventures and trying to work out who he really is and what he wants out of life.

But this story isn't about Dan. It's about Casey and how he copes with the fact that his best friend, whom he loves more than anyone, has problems that he cannot help him with, no matter how much he wants to. And when Dan goes away, a part of Casey leaves with him.

"I'll see you in a few, Danny."

"Talk to you tomorrow on-air, Case."

Casey reached out and touched Danny's elbow where it bent to hold the strap of his bag in place.

Dan smiled and walked over to the guard; Casey watched him take off and replace his shoes and go through the metal detector, just once. He watched him walk down the terminal until he was just a smear of black jacket and blue jeans Danny, and then he headed back home.

Over the next few months Dan writes to Casey, giving him glimpses of what he's doing and how he's working on coming home again. For Casey these letters are a life line he desperately needs and the only thing that keeps him from going to peices.

Casey-
Well, it was bound to happen. I got into a bar fight with some local lump of a guy. Just as an FYI? If you're ever in a bar fight in Kentucky, don't waste your time with what you imagine are witty barbs. The verbal sparring doesn't go over too well with Jesse and his buddies, Snake and Kenny. I spent the night in lockup, got released the next morning. The guy at the desk recognized me - told me to tell you he loves the show.

He takes to seeing Abby, firstly as a means of staying close to Dan, but later because the longer Dan stays away, the more Casey loses of himself. The only thing that truly keeps him going is the idea that one day Dan will come home.

In Ghosts and Sharks, Scrunchy has crafted a beautifully heartbreaking story of great depth and feeling. It's not slash, but there is a huge amount of love shared between these men and she has captured it perfectly. The ending is ambiguous, but fortunately the sequel, Faith Will Carry gives readers the resolution they so desperately crave.
