tessellation def:
a : MOSAIC b : a covering of an infinite geometric plane without gaps or overlaps by congruent plane figures of one type or a few types
I think nothing could describe Methos better than the word tessellation. That's what he is a living mosaic. Five thousand years of history, of life, wrapped up in one man.
Methos as a character has always fascinate me. He's such a mass of contradictions, equal parts dark and light. I fully believe that he wasn't lying to Duncan in the beginning when he described himself as "Just a guy." That's what he is a man. A man who has made mistakes, who has been hurt, and hurt others in turn. He's been Death on a horse and a mild mannered Watcher. What truly fascinates me the most about the character are the steps that lead him to the darker and the lighter places in his life. How did he become Death? What happened to make him hate that much? To want to destroy everything he came in contact with. What changed him, made him want to walk away from it all?
This story gives us a glimpse of what could have led to his becoming death. An incarnation of Methos that was actually worse than Death. In the sense of being more primal and animalistic. A time when he was lost in the dark with no sign of finding his way out. Making you wonder if Death was actually a step back onto the road of sanity.
When Duncan is in a dangerous situation Methos has to get back in touch with this part of himself to rescue him. In it you can see that all these past parts of Methos, that make up the whole of the man, are not truly gone. They lie close to one another. The edges bleeding in and touching. Never lost they make up all of who he is. The good, the bad and all the places in between all rolled up into one person.
