The Pool Series by Emily Brunson (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

Casey McCall a pool shark. Who'da thunk it, huh? Em Brunson did, that's who, and this trio of fics while being short, are mighty sweet; the prefect fluffy solution to a rainy afternoon (well, in my soggy part of the world they are.)

I really wanted to rec Dancing on Glass, Em's monster WIP that tears your heart out, stomps all over it and then shoves it back in without a care. However because there doesn't seem to be an end in sight, I've gone for a something a little less heart-wrenching.

In Rack 'Em, after many years of apparent pool-playing ineptitude, Casey comes clean about his real ability when he can't resist taking Dana's obnoxious date down a peg or two. This turn of events then catches Dan's eye in more ways than one.

Later that night, when Dan looked back on it, he could see everything so clearly. How beautifully Casey had played, to manage to lose so completely in the past. It was like watching a different player now, a Casey-shaped doppelganger whose deadly break sank two balls again. No smiles, nothing but perfect, keen concentration on his face, no trace left of the clumsy, inept player he'd been fifteen minutes ago.

At that point Dan knew why they called these players sharks. Graceful, poised. And fucking deadly.

This segues into Running the Table where they boys talk and, well, do other stuff, which in turn leads into Going Penguin, where Casey is persuaded to take part in a charity pool tournament and ends up winning more than he bargains for.

An immensely talented writer, Em's Sports Night fics abound with humour, banter and wonderful characterization. And, of course, a smidgen of angst. But in this case, only a smidgen.

Em seems to be concentrating on other fandoms these days, but if she ever returns her attention to Sports Night, I'll be the first to fall to my knees and give thinks.
