Midnight by the Weasley Watch by ExcessivelyPerky (PG)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Author Profile on FF.net
Why this must be read:
Ron and Snape-centric gen isn't something one finds often, and this story is both long and very readable, even for a non-chess player. This Ron is appealingly sympathetic without seeming older or nicer than he really is, and his concerns seem so in character. The Snape in this story is cranky but distantly caring of his charge's safety. There's a well-crafted plot and subplot: Ron and Snape go to the Wizard's Chess Championship in Bulgaria, and Snape has an Order of the Phoenix mission to complete while he also competes in the tournament. (Snape as a former chess prodigy works for me. And this shared interest is one of the few ways that I can see Snape ever respecting Ron, besides his learning to appreciate Ron's fighting spirit and loyalty.)
