Call of the Wild by Helen (R)
Well, it's November 30 in my part of the world which means it's time to hand over the Crack Van keys to someone else. I've had a great time reccing Sports Night this month; revisiting some old favourites and discovering new ones. It's such a great fandom and the writers are simply wonderful. So it is with great reluctance that I present you with my final recommendation.
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dan/Casey, Dan/Other
Author on LJ:
helenish
Author Website: Helenish
Why this must be read:
Also known as Gigolo to the Stars, this story picks up after Kafelnikov and takes a sharp left turn thereafter.
Dan's feeling restless. He's in therapy and while it's going okay, he's still not sure how he should be feeling. When Casey make a seemingly innocent remark, Dan takes it to heart and before long they find themselves in a situation they never anticipated.
"No, Danny, no, will you shut up a minute? I thought you didn't want to cry, so I was helping you. not cry."
"Maybe I wanted to."
"Then do."
"Don't feel like it."
"Oh."
"I'm sort of past that stage," Dan said apologetically.
"What stage are you at now?"
"I don't know."
"Oh."
"I'll keep you posted."
"You do that."
This is a dialogue-heavy, but very entertaining story. It's fun to watch Dan and Casey tie themselves in knots and then try to work their way out again. But at the same time there's an undercurrent on melancholy running through it. Dan's obviously struggling with something and Casey worries that he's only making it worse. Once again Helen has a firm grasp on the characters and a wonderful way with dialogue that leaves you smiling with delight at the end.
