From Here To St. Tropez by Emony (PG)

Hello, I'm Anna, and I am the Buffy the Vampire Slayer driver for this month. I have been watching Buffy since late season 2, which is a while back now, and reading fic for the past three or four years. At first I was into the Fanged Four, but times have changed and now I'm pretty much exclusively Trio and what has come to be known as Alternative Trio. The Trio you all know as Warren Mears, Andrew Wells and Jonathan Levinson, Buffy's archnemeses of Season 6. The Alternative Trio is Tucker Wells, Katrina Silber and Amy Madison. To remind you who these characters are, I've decided to write short character blurbs. Though, as far as I have planned, Amy will not appear in any fics I actually rec and Tucker in only one (he seems to be in an inordinate number of WiPs), I've included all six, as the links I give will hopefully lead you to other fics with these characters in them.

Warren Mears
The treatment of Warren Mears can be so divergent from author to author and, indeed, from fic to fic within an author's own work, that it is difficult to paint a general fic portrait of the character. That he is something of a sociopath is generally undisputed, though his behaviour is consistently modified by context. And it is that which makes Warren such a rich and interesting character to both read and write. He is not a cold psychopath; rather, he would like to be. This crucial dichotomy within the character has led fic writers to investigate his reactions to many different situations, and they have thus produced fics of great variety, ranging from the truly disturbing to the touchingly sweet. Just don't let him hear you say that.

Andrew Wells
Possibly better documented than Warren in mainstream fandom due to greater longevity on Buffy and then into Angel, Andrew is the Geek turned Watcher (or Hobbit?). His personality, however, is notably disturbing. Andrew tends to absorb the vibe around him and become whatever will earn him most marks, and this character trait is rarely shied away from in fic. Sometimes merely submissive, sometimes portrayed with a bit more backbone, Andrew is generally seen as obsessively single-minded and sycophantic. However, he can be tender, sweet, and can bring out either the disturbingly kinky or the gentle side of Warren, depending on what fic you read. Besides Warren, Andrew is often paired with Spike, Xander, Jonathan, and sometimes even with girls.

Jonathan Levinson
The least dedicated member of the Trio once things turned dark, possibly because of his history with Buffy and the Scoobies. Jonathan, unlike Andrew, is not willing to follow Warren blindly into truly disturbing aspects of villainy, and in fic as in canon, is sometimes the betrayer of the Trio. He is, to me, the least interesting member. I have never read a fic where his vacillation was really made into a compelling moral dilemma, which I think is odd, given the wealth of material available in canon for such a premise. Superstar!Jonathan, however, is pretty cool.

Tucker Wells
Now, ironically, known to most as Andrew's brother, and he's pissed about it. Tucker Wells appeared in only one episode of Buffy (3.20, The Prom), but has amassed quite a fandom, considering. There are possibly 17 of us worldwide. He is usually portrayed as extremely callous towards his brother and very competitive with Warren, whether they are together or not. He sometimes competes for the affection of Katrina. He is often very intense and prone to addiction of one sort or another, whether emotional, psychological or physical. He is generally paired with Warren, and sometimes Katrina and Amy (separately or at the same time).

Katrina Silber
Appearing alive in only two episodes and, post mortem, one more, there is not a wealth of material in canon upon which to base fic representations of Katrina. However, she is usually portrayed as intelligent and strong willed, as comes across on the show. She can often have something of a fascination for intense types like Warren and Tucker, and has also been known to get together with Amy. The girl patently needs counselling of some sort, but until then, she makes great fic. Her sexy intelligence, together with her wit and sarcasm and capacity for utter contempt as well as furious anger, make her an excellent character to play with.

Amy Madison
Amy featured in a few episodes of Buffy in the earlier seasons, and of course was a regular character in rat form from Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered up until Smashed. She is generally portrayed as a crack!magic user/abuser as well as enabler. Amy, like Katrina, is sexily intelligent and extremely capable of callous treatment and scathing contempt of others. And those are her redeeming features. She has not appeared in vast amounts of fic that I am aware of, but where she has appeared, writers have had fun with all these traits.

Now, to the fic. :)

Why this must be read: This was the first Warren/Andrew I read where I truly fell in love with the alternate universe and what Emony did with the characters in it. It breaks away just before the armoured car heist at the amusement park in Seeing Red and gives us an alternative future for Warren and Andrew. It's set in glorious St. Tropez, where two of the Trio have decided to stay, living off their ill-gotten gains on a sun-drenched Mediterranean beach. While the story is ultimately sweet, Warren is still dark and Andrew is still naive enough to love him for it. This story does have subsequent parts and, as a series, is unfinished, but this first part was originally written as a one-off and stands perfectly well alone.

It had been four months and one relocation, down to the sun-drenched French Riviera, later when Warren finally admitted to himself that he wasn't going to leave Andrew the next morning. It started off as something comforting, had become familiar, and ended up comfortable. Not that there aren't times when Warren hates Andrew more than anyone else on the planet and just wants to snap his neck so he'll stop fucking talking. Those times are far less frequent than they used to be, though. Most of the time now Warren is happy to just let Andrew be. He listens when he wants to, and lets Andrew's voice wash over him when he doesn't. He feels calmest when he's touching Andrew - holding his hand, resting a foot in his lap, anything. Just knowing that he's there and isn't going anywhere.
