Why this must be read:

For real, I hate this part of the assignment. Because I like it. Isn't that enough? And okay, also because Kaylee, and River, and Kaylee and River together. Objects In Space is generally seen as the point of no return for Simon and River, the premature end of the series and the freefall into something new. Eli nails River's clarity/confusion and the shimmer of change like it's no trouble at all.

Also, Kaylee and River. Together.

Kaylee likes boys. Hard, flat chests and muscled shoulders and hairy legs, stubble scraping against her cheek. She likes the way they smell, the way they surround her, the way she can take them in and make them gasp and make them hers.

She likes boys. So she can't figure out what she's doing with River.

I think I've run into this story elsewhere, though--maybe you could link to an archive (I think it might be at Firefly's Glow) so people can enjoy until the other sorts itself out. Just my $.02. :)
