How Toby Fell by Lora (NC-17)
Digging out a classic now...
Fandom: Oz
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author website: No, but the rest of her B/K fics can be found on C5 Fiction
Why this must be read: Because it will make you feel good. *g* Oh, and also because it's a beautifully realized AU take on the guys, tweaked enough for them to fit smoothly into this alternate reality, but with enough traces of their canon selves to still ring true.
Technically, this story is a prequel to one called "Desperately Seeking Rebadow," but sadly that is a WIP likely never to be completed. Thankfully we have this complete fic, though, and two others in this universe -- "Gibraltar May Tumble" & "Gibraltar Revisited" to provide plenty of reading satisfaction. Don't skip DSR, though; it may be incomplete, but what's there is choice.
The gist is: this Chris is a cop, this Toby is an actor, and much angst and drama ensues as they fall head over heels in love.
Chris had wondered, after that experience, whether he was actually
bisexual, but the thought held no alarm; he decided he liked sex,
period, and had no feelings of guilt. The following year he had a
different roommate, and although he would occasionally run into Richie
on campus, they never got together again. He'd rarely thought about
Richie in the intervening years; he'd acquired a Master's degree in
Criminology and joined the NYPD as a patrolman, in due course becoming
a detective. All subsequent encounters after that year with Richie
had been with women, although he'd never met one he wanted to marry.
Chris considered having sex with Richie not an aberration but a
learning experience, just as he had when he'd jumped a ramp with
training wheels at the age of five, and although he'd never repeated
what he'd done with Richie, he'd never completely ruled it out as a
possibility.
Now, at thirty-two, as he walked along an icy sidewalk beside Toby
Beecher, he sent a mental thanks to Richie Hanlon. He had no idea
whether Toby was feeling what he was, but if the electricity he'd felt
when they touched and looked into each other's eyes had been mutual,
he owed Richie a debt of gratitude for showing a straight college boy
that there were possibilities he'd never considered.
And as they reached the bar that had been their destination, about to
follow Gloria and Jeremiah inside, he and Toby reached for the door at
the same time and his hand covered the other man's. There was a
pause, as their hands lingered, and Toby looked over his shoulder at
Chris. Their eyes met again, in the dim light from inside the bar, as
they had in the theater. Then Toby smiled, and Chris was eternally,
irrevocably lost in his eyes, and knew that was the only place he had
ever wanted to be.
In this case, I'm not sure if you even can send feedback now, but even so -- go, read, enjoy; if you like your B/K romantic, you won't be disappointed.
